UK newcomers Old Selves are already starting to make a name for themselves. The Brit metallers will drop their enthralling debut EP, Two Minds, on Friday 1st January 2021. With that in mind, the stout quartet have exclusively given us this unique track by track breakdown of the EP:
“SONNET FOR SORROW”: The opening track ‘Sonnet for Sorrow’ is a bit of a reflection, looking back at the last year and how much the world has changed and has been affected.
“TWO MINDS”: Felix, the vocalist of this band is a Mental Health Nurse and this song is very much a reflection of his observations of those experiencing depression. The chorus is in two parts, the first part the lyrics speak about ‘Behavioural Activation’, a self-help intervention that aims to increase daily functioning, it’s fast and intense, the second half of the chorus gets lower, heavier and more hard hitting, the lyrics speak about how and why it might be so hard for somebody to engage in something like this. The track gives the feeling of a push pull scenario, with deep, rumbling and solid riffs before a breakdown that hits you with high screams and an impending sense of heavy metal dread.

“444” (check it out below): This track illustrates a panic attack and communicates the vibe of such an experience not just in the lyrics, but in the sound and feeling of the song. It is intense, puts you on the edge of your seat and has that vibe of intense, but strangely enjoyable angst. Heavy guitars, sections that are designed to compel you to move, a constant melodic build up to a very panicked, harrowing but hang-bang-worthy breakdown.
“LOST”: Atmospheric and almost relaxing, this track uses sparkling clean guitar, orchestration and reverb to ease you into the final two tracks of this record.
“POPULATION”: Punchy, solid riffs, fast paced and catchy. Squealing lead guitar sections and an impressive guitar solo to end. This track is a reflection on the opinions and feelings about modern day life and those in higher power. The rage and frustration is particularly evident in the furious vocals and powerful screams.

“SEAT IN THE HALL”: Possibly the most progressive track on the record, this track continues to build with plenty of melody but with those harrowing, honest and powerful vocals remaining consistent throughout. A clean mid-section introduces choir style vocals and sparkling, shimmering clean guitar. Ending with a chorus that is best described as atmospheric, epic and melodic, whilst remaining suitably as heavy as the rest of this record. Another screaming guitar solo is introduced and plays the track out.”
