After Smoke Clears release new video and tell us their top six influential songs

Fast rising UK heavyweights After Smoke Clears will drop their enthralling new single and video, “The Fear” (scroll down to watch). This powerful new cut marks a fresh sound that is heavier, darker and harder-hitting than their previous work. The track also features the vocal prowess of CJ McMahon from Thy Art Is Murder. With all of this in mind, we asked the guys to give us their top six tracks that have influenced their engrossing sound.

Check out the videos for each song below, or head to Spotify where the band have compiled a handy-dandy playlist!

Silent Planet – “Northern Fires”

Silent Planet have been a massive influence for many years. Their ability to blend crushingly heavy and intricate riffs with ethereal soundscapes has always been amazing. Mix that together with Garrett’s incredibly thought provoking and powerful lyrics and boom, there’s the magic.

Architects – “A Match Made In Heaven”

In the last year or so we’ve been working to incorporate a more ‘shouty’ element into my vocals. This style is used flawlessly by Sam from Architects, as heard in this song.

Also the wideness of vocal range used here is incredible and very inspiring

Splinter Cell – “Darko”

We’ve really been exploring new ways of mixing sound effects in heavy music. We love the way this track focuses on highlighting rhythmic variations paired with atmospheric, horror sounding background to give the track some unexpected melodic dynamic. We really love the unrelenting aggression of this track and the HUGE GATE on the guitar to keep it so very tight.

Gone/Dead – “Structures”

This song just oozes groove and simplicity, but without sacrificing detailed layers which bring the song to a crescendo that you can’t not two-step to. The repetition of the lyrics and combination of the 808 drum breaks give it a bit of a hip-hop feel which we’ve used for inspiration in exploring new elements to include in the writing process.

Diazepam – “Ten56”

This song combines rhythmical elements to give the song both a sense of slow heavy groove from the drums and instruments, but also the staccato tension created by the backing effects. This song probably has one of the heaviest breakdowns so far, until The Fear comes out, and you can fight us.

Dan Mayo – “Black Ash”

In this run we took a slightly different approach to write the tracks, making them darker and including some electronic elements with synths and drums. A little inspiration came from the latest Dan Mayo solo project “Greenhouse”. The use of his modular board creates a soundscape that, combined with his grooves makes it impossible to stand still.
