Ascending heavyweights Atarka set loose their gripping new EP, The Mountain, out Friday 14th April, and it’s a furious one packed with weighty slabs of groove-tinged crushing metal that shifts, twists and delivers every step of the way. With that in mind, we spoke to guitarist, Daniel McCarthy and he give us this exclusive track by track breakdown of the EP!
A seethingly furious reaction to the senseless violence that is being witnessed on our TV screens every day since February last year. A truly horrid Mountain in and of itself, of which over 40,000,000 people must overcome for the benefit of future generations. This is the realisation that the value of one man’s desire to politick on the global stage trumps that of human life. An age-old equation that is as sickening as it is confusing.

The Nethermost Blight:
An incomprehensible mass of writhing appendages and a multitude of all-seeing eyes take Atarka “beyond the wall of sleep”. A Lovecraft-inspired take on the subversion, mental distortion and eventual total psychological annihilation inflicted by a meddling Outer God on the human psyche.
Barbarian (ft. Björn Strid):
“Barbarian” is a track that looks at online absolutism, and how quickly that can evolve into near-barbaric levels of tribalistic behaviour, which we frequently see pouring out into the “real world”. We keep repeating this mistake, despite knowing full well of the historical desire held by certain people to eliminate all nuanced and intelligent discussion by continually highlighting the differences between us. The name of the game? “We will find out which side you are on” .
The Mountain:
“The Mountain” attempts to frame the torrent of seemingly unconquerable challenges that we as people are faced with (and more importantly – overcome) in life, as well as the struggles of those that came before us. It’s also a throwback to when we were writing “Sleeping Giant”, as the main theme of the song was a riff that we couldn’t find a home for on our first record.
