24 Songs of Xmas / Single Review: Vulgarithm – Christmas Time With Vulgarithm

It has to be said I was in two minds about reviewing this single. It is so far from my usual cup of tea that it barely resembles an aromatic beverage prepared by pouring boiling water over dried leaves. In the end I decided… it’s Christmas! So here’s the review!

Vulgarithm 'Christmas Time With Vulgarithm' coverI had never heard of Vulgarithm and had to read the press release carefully to see if it was a group or a person… he is a person! As to what he is like, all I had to go on was the pictures in the press release where, at first glance, he appeared to be wearing a giant Brussels sprout on his head. On closer inspection, it looks more like a Mexican wrestler’s mask… that looks like a Brussels sprout! As to what to expect from this single, “Christmas Time With Vulgarithm”, I searched for a genre that might describe the type of music he produces. The best I could find was something that described his sound as “Riff Rave”. I do not know if that helps you, but it left me none the wiser. All I could do, was dive in with both ears and give it a listen.

It has to be said that the song is every bit as weird the the description above would suggest. The music, once it took off, reminded me of the kind of metal that is usually accompanied with full on growl… but not in this song. Instead we have a heavily processed warble. At first, I could not get my head around it, but the more I listen, the more it grew on me. I can not say that it is in my top ten Christmas favourites… but it is definitely staying on the Christmas playlist.
