With a name like DunkelNacht, it’s easy enough to figure out where they come from. Yup, . Lille, to be precise. Yeah, OK, so maybe it wasn’t that obvious after all.
Kicking off in 2004 as a solo ambient/melodic project, founder Heimdall found a vocalist after releasing one album and changed the direction of what was now a band towards extreme metal. With the addition of a second guitarist and a bassist, they released a split album with Mass Grave in 2007.
They released their first full album, Atheist Dezekration, in 2009 losing one guitarist and gaining another along the way. The band is now firmly into the black metal sphere, though has held onto the use of samples used by Heimdall back in the beginning.
After a couple more line-up changes, the band started work on their new album, Revelatio, in 2012. It took some time to put together, but with the hard work and a change of label, it’s due out sometime this winter (2013). I don’t think I have a firm date as yet.
Dunkelnacht have an interesting sound. The benefit of the clash of genres is that they have a lot of sounds to play with so there is a lot of variety in the eleven tracks on offer. There’s a good use of samples for atmosphere which really suits an album of this ilk without them sounding like an electronic band.
The track below, “Where Livid Lights Emblaze” is one of the more mainstream tracks on the album, sitting nicely in the middle of all the genres they cross over.
