[avatar =”Mosh” size=”50″ align=”left” /]Duality is a technical death band hailing from Italy, but their music is far more varied than much of that within their genre. Listening to their album Elektra, there are very prog-like breaks amongst the driving rhythms and harsh vocals. They do cite jazz as an influence and this is definitely apparent.
Formed in 2003 as a fairly run-of-the-mill death band of the era, over the intervening decade or so, their sound has developed to pull in and utilise a wide variety of influences. They even have a violin as a major part of the sound! Imagine classic death edged with Norway’s blackjazz act Shining and you’re getting there.
Elektron is their third release, but first full album and it’s 47 minutes if quality music full of surprises. The lighter sections are incredibly laid back and really allow the heavier segments to sneak up on you. Even in a short track like “Azure”, the band throw more curveballs than in a season of professional baseball.
It’s the heavier music that appeals to me, though, and the blinding pace in some songs is superb. The opening of “Along The Crack”, for instance just grabs you and won’t let go.
