Turning down the lights, hanging up some black drapes and warming up some pasta now, as today’s Band of the Day are black metal act Gotland from Italy. They describe themselves, simply, as Italian black metal and their sounds backs this up. Not just the black metal part, but the Italian adjective.
Alongside the heavy orchestral tones and guttural vocals from new(ish) singer Irmin, the band add in the occasional lilt on the guitar or kets which just has that Italian feel to it. It’s not there all the time, but when it comes you just feel that it’s a little nod to their motherland. It’s the lyrics which are the main influence, though, with many songs detailing clashes between the once mighty Roman Empire and invading barbarians.
With two albums and a demo out, this is a band who know what they’re doing and the production on 2014’s Gloria Et Morte at least is something to behold – ideally with decent speakers or headphones.
