Sometimes, when a band rises from the ashes of a previous one you get a situation like Newcastle’s Tomorrow is Lost find themselves in; fully formed, a set of great looking gigs lined up and the first of many planned singles about to be released. Why do I seem so surprised? Well if anything it is the standard of the very limited music I have heard so far. Their cover of Sia’s “Electric Heart” already gives you an idea to what to expect from this band. It’s heartfelt, it’s dynamic and vocally it’s very, very strong.
I have been lucky enough to have heard the forthcoming release, Insane and I can happily reveal here that the only truly ‘Insane’ thing about it is how good it is. It’s a perfect debut single and I think it is going to gain them a lot of (well deserved) attention. Lyric-wise there is whole other level to their world but I will let the band tell you all about it…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
Newcastle Upon Tyne and York.
How did you meet?
Cass and Joe were in a previous band together which came to an end in late 2016. They had been looking to form a new band and recruited Adam and Andrew in January 2017. Ryan would later us in July 2017 – completing the lineup that you see today… so we’re about as new as it gets!
How long have you been playing as a band?
We played our very first gig together as a four-piece in February this year, and Ryan has been with us for a couple of months now. It’s been a crazy six months for sure – but the best is definitely yet to come!
Before you get sick of being asked where does the band name come from?
‘Tomorrow Is Lost’ started as ‘Tomorrow’s Lost’ (and if you scroll back through our Facebook page the evidence should still be there!) and was actually a line in an old song that we used to play. We didn’t like the apostrophe and ‘Tomorrow Is Lost’ was later born. After two practices together we hadn’t even started thinking of names, and the opportunity arose to play the main stage at the Newcastle O2 Academy, at which point we realised that we really needed a name – and we needed one fast.
What are your influences?
Somehow we still manage to all complement each other despite all having very different tastes in music; with influences ranging from Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, KISS, My Chemical Romance, Halestorm, Alter Bridge, Guns N’ Roses, Queen, Green Day, The Smiths, In This Moment… the list goes on and on.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
I’m confident that we aren’t alone in this as a band – but we did not set out to achieve a particular sound, or to fit into any particular genre when we started out, and I still believe that to be the case. We’ve been described as being for fans of Halestorm, Black Stone Cherry and Alter Bridge (which is a huge compliment as far as I’m concerned) – but we are very much just five people from five very different musical backgrounds who came into each other’s lives under pretty strange circumstances, who have started making (in my opinion) pretty awesome, straight up rock songs; which I hope many, many people will love and enjoy.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
The song “Insane” gave birth to the much bigger “Shadow Man” concept, which in itself entails about five songs at the moment, three of which will be released as a “Shadow Man Trilogy” of singles (the first being “Insane” which is our debut single and will be released on 28/10/17, with “Keeper of the Lost” and “Shadowman” to follow). Lyrically these songs might seem pretty dark on the surface, but the deeper and intended message is more a one of hope and resilience, which I hope listeners will identify as more is revealed in the series. But it doesn’t stop there… we’ve got a whole lot more all ready and waiting too!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Not too long ago we played at this awesome hidden gem venue in Newcastle called Little Buildings (please check this place out – and if you get a chance to play, go for it!). No exagerration – this room has a capcaity of about 30 and was no bigger than your average living room, but the atmosphere and energy at this gig was nothing short of unbelievable.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
Joe and Ryan both go through more guitars than they do hot dinners; but generally Joe will be playing an Epiphone Les Paul Prophecy or a Jackson Dinky, and Ryan will usually use his Gibson Les Paul Custom.
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
We have our single launch for “Insane” coming up at Jumpin’ Jacks in Newcastle on 28 October 2017 which we are crazy excited about. This will be our first headline show – and we’re amazed to say that we’re over 50% sold already, so if anyone fancies coming along – we would love to see some new faces – be quick! What are your plans for the rest of 2017/ 2018?
We’ve got a wicked run of gigs throughout October and November this year ing some awesome bands including Bigfoot, As Sirens Fall, The Dead XIII and Jack The Envious. For 2018 we’ve been really fortunate to be playing at some excellent events, including Dementia Aware Fest in both London and Cannock, and at the Badass Bash in Wakefield. If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before?
There’s an incredible local band called Saints of Arcadia whose frontman Nick Jennison absolutely blew my mind when we seen them ing British Lion earlier this year. In reality we should still be ing them really – but for arguments sake let’s put them on first. As a headliner (there’s a hundred bands I could think of here!) – it would be really cool to Black Stone Cherry, or My Chemical Romance on a Black Parade Reunion Tour (hey, it might happen!)
From previous Band of the Day Thunder On The Left: If you punch yourself and it really hurts, does that make you strong or weak?
I would undoubtedly cry so I want to say weak, but I guess whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger – so read into that what you will! This question gets harder the more you think about it…
And from Crow Country Outlaw: Would you trade your current life for another musician’s in of success, style, friends, family, etc.?
I mean I can’t speak for everyone but right now – absolutely not. I’m pretty confident that we are precisely where we need to be, doing exactly what it is we should be doing; and I’m pretty excited to see what’s coming next.
