Simple things first – where are you guys from?

How did you meet?
I met Justin at a show my former drummer was filling in on. He was running sound for the show. A year later when he saw our former drummer left the band he sent us a message and a video of him shredding on drums. I knew when I saw that video he was the perfect drummer for Source. I met Riley through a friend who recommended him for Source once our former bassist left the band. My friend Andy told me to check out Riley’s solo album Lightstory where he plays guitar, bass and drums on the record. I took one listen and knew he would be perfect for Source. He is one of the most skilled musicians I’ve ever met!
How long have you been playing as a band?
Source has been a band for 5 years now. We have been together with the new lineup since June of 2018.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
I’ve decided that Source is more of a question than anything else. That question is “What is the source of my present experience?” Ask yourself that and see where it takes you. Whatever you imagine the answer to be can’t really be the answer because it’s still one step removed from its source.
What are your influences?
Tool, Opeth, Mastodon, A Perfect Circle, Between The Buried and Me, Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa to name a few.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
I think the fact that we’re a trio is one thing that sets us apart. We make so much sound for just 3 people and that really blows people away. I also think the mixture of intricate melody, complex rhythms, massive tones and creative song structures really set us apart.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
How does suffering actually serve me? What is its purpose? How can I use it to create lasting change and experience the most profound beauty life has to offer?
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
Full of energy, tight and inspiring. I think we’ve played a few hundred shows at this point.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Seeing a girl crowdsurfing get dropped on her head by a security guard failing to catch her during In Flames in Clifton Park, New York.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
Justin plays Tama Drums and Paiste Cymbals. Riley plays Dingwall basses and I play PRS Guitars.
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
Our new album Totality dropped March 1st!
What are your plans for 2019?
Touring a bunch, we want to get everywhere in the US and Canada as well as start touring overseas.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
I would want to be on a tour with Opeth headlining and Patema playing before us. That would be such an incredible night of music! Both us and Patema are huge Opeth fans so it would make a ton of sense.
From previous Band of the Day, Empire Warning: If a Norse God had to take over from one band member what god will it be, what position would they be filling?
It would be Hodor the Norse God of Darkness and I think definitely Bass.
From another BotD, The Crawling: Being in a band can be as much of curse as a source of enjoyment and satisfaction. What keeps you going when things get tough?
Humour. We can always find something to laugh about and it seems like when things are toughest we find something overwhelmingly funny to laugh about.
And from King Bison (UK): If you could any band on stage for one song, who would it be and what track would you play?
Tool – “Lateralus”. They always jam out the middle section and bring musicians from the opening act to jam with them on that section. That would be a serious dream come true.
