You’ve heard of Brewdog, now let us introduce you to Brewfish…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We are based out of Long Beach, California.
How did you meet?
Zac Martins and Alex Kay met online while searching for a drummer. It turned out their old bassist went to high school with Zac. We met our new bassist Tim Frankeny through shows while he was performing with other bands.
How long have you been playing as a band?
Brewfish has been established since 2011.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
The name comes from kicking back and drinking brews like fish drink water. We thought it was funny back then and it stuck.
What are your influences?
Our influences include a variety of things stemming from reggae, rock, hip hop, R&B, punk. Basically anything we’ve all grown up with either individually or together.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
Our music is raw and different, from either straight roots reggae to grungy rock. It’s a mix of both, a mix of neither, a work of something else. It’s us.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
Our lyrics are rooted in real situations, real life, or things that happened to others, or things that could happen to any of us. It includes love, hate, happy, sad, lost, found, anything, everything.
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
Our live shows are fun and the crowds we bring are also. We like to play with everything we got when we go on. We’ve lost count but we’ve been playing shows since the inception of Brewfish in 2011. Probably in the thousands by now!
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
The wildest thing we’ve seen at a show that I could think of right now is a crowd storming the stage and dancing, wilding out while we were playing while security was trying to escort them down. What a good night!
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
Zac uses a custom Galane drum kit, Alex uses a Paul Reed Smith Special Edition Guitar, and Tim plays a modified Fender Bass.
What are your plans for 2019?
Our plans for the rest of the year are to finish the festival shows we have lined up, including Roots on 66 in Victorville and Wonderfront in San Diego, then plan on even more next year.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
A great line up we would love to see is a Pennywise, Brewfish, Too Rude show. That would be rad!
