It’s been some time since we featured a solo artist, and longer still since we featured a female solo artist. Time to break that duck with BEEA…
Simple things first – where are you from?
I’m from Lisbon, Portugal.
How long have you been playing as a solo act?
I started thinking about having my own project back in 2016 when my last band ended.
In 2017 I started going to Alias Studios in Paris to record my EP and I played my first show in May last year with Against The Current (one of the best experiences of my life!).
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
Yes, that question is pretty common but I think I would be curious too! My name is Beatriz and everyone calls me Bea. I basically just added an extra “e” to make it stand out more.
What are your influences?
Mostly PVRIS, Tonight Alive and Against The Current.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
I like to describe it as heartfelt and emotional vocals and lyrics, backed up by mood-swinging music. From loud guitars to more beat-centered clean arrangements, I think it all makes sense somehow.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
So far all my songs talk about a specific period in my life where I was in a very toxic relationship. I wanted to tell the whole story and it felt really good writing all those lyrics and letting that period of my life go. It truly was like therapy for me.
Currently I’m just really excited to start writing about other aspects of my life. You’ll get a chance to hear new stuff later this year!
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
I’d say my shows are about love, friendship and me really putting my whole heart and soul out there. I really sing my heart out but I also enjoy connecting with the crowd and talk a little bit about me and how much my songs mean to me. I also enjoy tacky stuff like holding hands and making close eye with people while I’m performing.
With my current solo project I’ve only played twice with Against The Current. Unfortunately I don’t get many opportunities to play shows in a small country like Portugal. I am trying my best to change that this year!
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
I could write a whole book about it! I’ll just tell you about my most recent experience:
I was lucky enough to go to Warped Tour New Jersey last summer and I decided to see Bowling For Soup (every time I see them I always end up having the time of my life!). So yeah, I was watching their set in the back and I had a police van and a few police officers next to me. Suddenly, Jaret Reddick starts saying that there was an orgy happening inside the van with his mom! I immediately looked at the officers to see if they were mad about it, but they were laughing like crazy!
The band spent the entire show talking about the things that could be happening inside the vehicle and it truly was the funniest concert I’ve ever been to!
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
In my case (and I’m just a singer) I use a Telefunken M80 microphone and my beautiful A2e custom 64 Audio earphones.
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
Currently I’m still promoting my Paranoia EP and two shows. I’ll be playing in Paris on March 5th at La Dame de Canton with Oakman, Two Trains Left and Atlas For Home, and in Lisbon on March 19th with We Bless This Mess.
You can find all the details pretty easily on my Facebook or Instagram.
What are your plans for 2020?
At the moment I am working on an acoustic version of my Paranoia EP and also a few Disney covers, which I will start ing on my channel very soon!
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
I would love to Tonight Alive and then having my friends Two Trains Left opening for me. You should really check them out, they’re a great band and definitely deserve more attention!
