Band of the Day: Afterfall

Hailing from Mexico, Afterfall released their new single “Requiem” a few weeks ago. The band are now here to tell us a little bit more about themselves and the concepts behind their music…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Hi guys! Thanks for the time. We are from Mexico!

How did you meet?

We met at the music college we were studying by the time some years ago in Mexico City.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Well this project has recently started, October 1st 2019.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Oh, no worries, guys! Well, since we have a dystopian concept and lyrical theme, we considered that “Afterfall” would be a pretty accurate band name, powerful, simple, easy to . Plus this band is making its lyrics out of a novel written by our guitarist Angel. Back in the day, the first draft of the novel was called “After the fall” so that’s also a reason.

What are your influences?

That’s a good one though. In a general manner, so as not to make this a ridiculously huge list, we can say that we’ve been influenced by bands like Fleshgod Apocalypse, Septicflesh, Bloodshot Dawn, Gojira, Beyond Creation, Feared and Tesseract, to mention some of them.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We think that what makes us different from the rest is firstly that we never pursued the goal of sounding “similar to something” or to fulfill the characteristics of a single genre, we just wanted to play what makes us happy no matter if that means mixing baroque chord progressions with blast beats (like in our song “Requiem”) or putting together middle Eastern sounds with heavy riffs and intense drumming (like in our first single “Maere”).

We just wanted our songs to cause an impact to the crowd and ourselves as well, and secondly we are a band taking inspiration from a completely original novel that gives us a new concept to explore, every single detail in our concept has to do with a much bigger story in which pretty much everything can happen so, we believe that the aforementioned combination of sounds plus being a band which took the time to write and flesh out a totally original concept, makes us pretty different.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Yes! As we were previously saying our lyrical themes are based on the story of a self written book which delves into the story of a person trapped into a decadent and fractured society, being never ready to survive a conflict she never asked to be involved in, while having to protect her little sister’s life. That being said, the lyrics for the songs in this album are telling about how this girl is forced to adapt and survive by becoming the cruelest possible version of herself through the suffering caused by, for example, the death of her mother (narrated in “Requiem”) or the remorse she bears after taking a number of lives (“Maere”).

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Well, this is maybe going to be a little odd for you guys but, at the moment we haven’t played any shows yet. Since we want to properly reflect the concept we are trying to flesh out, we are focusing in things like a certain outfit, stage props or our own image for the stage while releasing this album in a song-by-song structure. Thus when the right time comes, the audience will have a quality show from us, properly developed from head to tail.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

There was one time at a show of a local friends band when a guy with a BoJack Horseman mask wildly broke through a moshpit to crazily throw some punches. That horse was a really bad one though.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

At the moment we use 8 string guitars, (Iron Label model) a pair of Mooer Preamp live pedals, Warwick basses, a Dark glass electronics bass drive pedal, bias FX 2, shure mics, a Pearl drumkit and a Behringer XR18 Mixing console to put all that together.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Right now we are promoting our new single “Requiem”, a song released pretty much a month ago.

What are your plans for 2020?

We are planning to release the rest of the singles in our album one by one and after that the album itself accompanied with various tour dates. In fact a new song from us is coming very soon and we can say that is going to be fast, aggressive and melodic.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Oh, that’s a really good one! When it comes to ing a band we’d say Gojira, Septicflesh, Fleshgod Apocalypse, In Flames or Jinjer, and local bands we’d love to play or tour with would be Nuclear Chaos, Tulkas, Lethal Creation, Glass Mind, Iden Gakusha and Majestic Downfall, all of those bands are simply great!
