Band of the Day: Fool’s Union

Hitting the more upbeat end of the rock scale today with some typically polite Canadian types…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re from the city of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada – a city with a fantastic music scene and good tacos, too!

How did you meet?

Nick and Dave have known each other since elementary school, Jon was the band’s recording engineer before ing the group, and Adam completed the lineup in 2015.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We’ve been playing as Fool’s Union for three years now, but we’ve all been playing together as a whole for over a decade.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

The name “Fool’s Union” was a title from a song from our previous band. Nick’s dad was talking one day about how his work union were bunch of fools – Nick’s antennas went up and “Fool’s Union” was born.

What are your influences?

Foo Fighters, Oasis, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Biffy Clyro, Jimmy Eat World.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We just play great songs with lots of heart and soul. We love what we do with no gimmicks attached.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Escapism, relationships.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Our live show is a rollercoaster of emotions and feelings you never knew you had. We’ve played around a dozen shows as Fool’s Union, hundreds before that in different bands.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Ate fire. Lol, not really.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Pearl drums, Fender guitars and amps.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Our new single “I’m Givin”. It’s our fifth single and is a rocker in the vein of Oasis and Rolling Stones.

What are your plans for 2020?

Playing the Bovine Sex Club in Toronto April 30. The Atria in Oshawa April 3, and CMW in Toronto May 19-23. Also working on our new album.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We’d love to open for Foo Fighters, and have Don Broco open for us.
