Bulgaria is a country I’ve not visited, yet. Judging by the number of live shows that Abysmatic put on, I should get there to catch them sometime!
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We’re from Sofia, Bulgaria.
How did you meet?
We were all actually playing in another band before – Bulgarian nu-metal pioneers Fyeld.
How long have you been playing as a band?
Abysmatic had its first official release in 2013, however the current lineup has been together for about 4 or 5 years.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
Abysmatic is a combination of the words “abysmal” and “automatic” and sort of refers to the Fibonacci sequence spiral, which in turn could be seen as a symbol for the age of time and the inevitability of death. It also obviously refers to the depths of hell and has some Satanic overtones.
What are your influences?
Nine Inch Nails, The Prodigy, Bring Me The Horizon, Die Antwoord… Lately alternative pop artists like Grimes, Poppy, Ic3peak and some new synthwave stuff like Perturbator and Scandroid.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
We’re playing a pretty rare mixture of industrial metal and electropunk, which could sort of be described as The Prodigy meets Static-X. Growing up during the nu-metal era, that sound obviously shaped a lot of our musical preferences, and when UK dubstep and drum and bass blew up around 2008, it seemed like a natural progression of the idea of combining pop and dance music with a really heavy sound, so we tried to come up with our version of that.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
Our most recent album’s lyrics actually have a common concept. They’re supposed to sound kind of pop-y but with a nihilistic twist and are mostly dealing with the notions of duality, individualism and believing in one’s own worth.
What’s your live show like?
Abysmatic’s live shows are an explosive mixture of pure punk rock energy and jump-up drum and bass style drops, which is sure to get everyone dancing.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Can really think of anything special, mostly people getting punched in the face.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
We’re using a 6-string Ibanez baritone guitar, vintage Korg synthesizers and Yamaha Stage Custom drums.
What are your plans for 2020?
We’re currently writing some new music and are gearing up to hit a couple of festivals around the country this summer.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
We’d obviously be honoured to our heroes The Prodigy, and there’s this new band from the UK called Strange Bones, which would fit right in.
