Straight out of Brooklyn, let’s learn how to go Bazerk…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
Brooklyn, Queens.
How did you meet?
I am like a basketball coach. I went out recruiting for the best all star team.
How long have you been playing as a band?
2005 we put Bazerk on the map.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
The name came from when you hear the word “bazerk” – you automatically think “nuts, crazy, wild, chaotic”. It’s what we play so you don’t have to guess what kind of music this is. Before you go crazy, you have go Bazerk first.
What are your influences?
We’ve got too many to name! I’ll just name a few to give your readers a broad view: Nirvana, George Clinton, Public Enemy, Busta Rhymes, Rage against the Machine, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, Slipknot, Prince, System of Down, Hedpe…
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
Our music is a combination of heavy rock mixed with hip hop and high energy punk/reggae elements. What makes us unique is most bands cover one genre, but we cover it all. One thing like most great bands that came before us – we have a distinctive sound.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
Of course I do. This gets the crowd going with their hands up. It’s our national anthem:
MY STYLE BIG, BIGGER THAN GODZILLA
WE BANG THIS SO HARD, THAT THE WHOLE WORLD CAN FEEL US,
IT’S HIP HOP, THAT HIP HOP
WE BE BANGING IT
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
Our live show is like no other. You don’t come to our show and sit there and watch us like we are some grandstand musicians. Everybody is part of the show – stage driving, mosh pit, crowd surfing… everybody can come on stage, sing, dance, whatever. I come into the crowd / mosh pit with everybody. The whole scene looks chaotic. After 6000 shows, I stopped counting!
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
The wildest thing I ever saw was people getting shot at point blank in my neighbourhood. After they got shot people came up and still robbed them after they were dead. Wildest thing I ever did at a show was to tell all the people “fuck the promoter” who had us pay to play for 20 minutes, and got the crowd to tear up the venue.
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
We just did a remake of Limp Bizkit’s “Break Stuff”. We have a video and the song out. We also have an album coming out called “Y’all Famous for Nothing” due out this year.
What are your plans for 2020?
Our plans have been put on hold for the time being. We were going to South Africa and then a world tour but since this virus happened we are at a standstill. But we are still doing live streaming shows till this is over, we are still going be putting out singles and content until this blows over.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
First band I would choose – no other than Rage Against the Machine. Second, Limp Bizkit / Hedpe. I would go last.
