Band of the Day: The KillerHertz

A new week, a new band. Well, new to us anyway. Wrap your ears and eyes around The KillerHertz…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

All live in or near Copenhagen in Denmark

How did you meet?

We were childhood friends who have had a break from the music scene due to family and kids…we came from different bands, such as Saturnus, Pitch Black and Morbid Vision, meaning we mostly played trash and death metal. But after a few years break we were eager to start a band together – and in the rock genre instead.

Along the way we have had some changes in our line-up. The two new spots are now filled in with Jonas Roxx on lead guitar and Jakob Nielsen on bass.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We started back in late 2011 – Kent KillerHertz on drums, Thomas Trold on guitar and vocals, and two former Tais Pedersen on lead guitar and Stefan Staff on bass. Some of us had sold all our equipment, so we started rehearsing once a week on borrowed instruments.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Thomas Trold and a former member Tais came up with the name one night, after been searching for a suitable name through different types of media. They came across The KillerHertz and we all thought it sounded great.

What are your influences?

There’s a ton of bands and artists, but mostly classic bands and artists from the 70s, 80s and 90s, such as Megadeth, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Motley, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Mercyful Fate etc. The era of that time has had a significant influence on all of us, some of the best albums are made in that period.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We wanted a bit of that old school sound, blended with a more modern rock approach – and with Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica, Morbid Angel etc.) mastering of our first album back in 2014, we got exactly that sound we were looking for. Our new album has a more modern, polished sound too it, if you compare it with our first two releases. We´re a mix of new and old, and as Rock Lifestyle describe us: “The KillerHertz is like Volbeat had a baby with Megadeth”.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Thomas Trold writes all lyrics himself and most of the writings is actually done at home, or in the rehearsal-room. The lyrics has a wide life expression, containing personally experiences, crisis, broken relationships, people in general, who we are and so on…Death, life and love are mainly the subjects through our songs, which most people can relate to. But whatever comes to mind and perhaps depending on which emotional stage you’re in.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

High energy live shows with catchy choruses and tight beats… and we are giving away free stuff, such as CDs and other merch. We have actually no idea, around 50-60 shows perhaps.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Well there are always stories to tell…some impossible to retell or to far out, but we have this cover song we use to play at the end of our shows, where some of our female fans tends to show breasts during the song…definitely a perfect crowd pleaser!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

  • Thomas Trold – ESP guitars, Peavey amplifier, Marshall cabs and Boss pedals
  • Kent KillerHertz – Yamaha drums, Meinl cymbals, Vic Firth sticks
  • Jonas Roxx – Les Paul custom guitars, Marshall amps and cabs, Boss and Dunlop pedals
  • Jakob Bo Nielsen – Musicman Stingray basses – Trace Elliott amp – Sans Amp BDDI pedals

What are your plans for 2020?

We are producing music videos at the moment – with four video releases within a month and a half of each other, which means releases in January, March, May and June this year. At the same time, we will release an EP album the 29th of May. The concert schedule is still in the making, but hopefully this summer with a couple af concerts in Copenhagen and then we´ll see. The big goal is to play some bigger venues, like festivals and to play abroad. Perhaps a small tour…

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
