Band of the Day: Truth Decayed

Plenty of heavy music coming from the African continent these days. Here’s another particularly noisy example…

Simple things first, where are you from?

Ryno: Durban, South Africa

How long have you been playing?

Ryno: All of us have played for quite some time. Brandon was very active around 2007-2009, and Warren and myself started jamming 1998 if I’m not mistaken. This is Johan’s first proper band he’s in, but he has solid experience and musical knowledge.

Where does the band name come from?

Ryno: It was basically inspired by how many perceived versions of truth exist in today’s digital age with social media ect.

What are your influences?

Brandon: Amon Amarth!

Warren: Slayer!

Johan: Arch Enemy and Iron Maiden.

Describe your music – what makes you unique?

Brandon: I think we are a good mix of the old school Sepultura vibe, with influences coming from some of the newer bands today.

Warren: We play from the heart, and everyone has input. I think this gives us a unique sound.

Johan: I think our different backgrounds and taste in music gives us a good mix for our sound.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Ryno: At this point it is mostly topical around the actual name of the band. Distorted Truth through the complete information overload on the internet. Bias and constant arguments by strangers on digital platforms. And we do it mostly from an observational point of view, as opposed to telling people how to live their lives, or what’s right or wrong.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played for?

Ryno: We are a new band, and a lockdown band. So no shows as Truth Decayed yet, but we seem to have made some good headway online. We have picked up a loyal fanbase which has helped us pick up two accolades is a short space of time (listener voted top 5 placing on The Planet’s SA Metal Madness Week out of 51 bands, and Band Battle winners on The Metal Lab) On a personal level though, most of us have been part of energetic bands and we love to translate that with our music.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Warren: I once wore a red gown for a gig at the Winston here in Durban. I was walking on the road to that gig, and some guy rode past on a bicycle and shouted “lady of the night!” and when he saw my face he was like “Argh, it’s a dude!”

What kit do you use?

Ryno: I usually use my AS Guitar, and Warren and I both use Crate Amps.

Warren: Ibanez guitars mostly, and an Ampero for my tone.

Johan: I play an Ibanez Iceman.

What are you plugging and promoting at the moment?

Warren: Our two track mini EP is launching on the 23rd of October. We are very excited to share this and start building a great foundation to grow from.

Ryno: I am endorsed by AS Guitars, so I’m honoured to promote their awesome craftsmanship, and the amazing attention to detail that Alain Smith puts into these guitars.

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

Warren: Tour as much as we can, and write as much as we can. I want a full album out by then.

Ryno: I agree with Warren, if lockdown restrictions are eased enough then I would also love to perform at as many of South Africa’s provinces as possible. And definitely get a full album out too.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing, and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Warren: I would love to open for Jinjer or Arch Enemy.

Ryno: I think being a new band, even though we are all experienced musicians it’s a bit weird to name someone to open for us. So I suppose anyone who is good with a great attitude.
