Time for a trip Down Under, to the land of shrimp-filled Barbies (I still wonder how Ken feels about that) and Lederhosen. Or is that Austria? Anyway, many words from the lovely Desiree, the vocalist from Wicked Envy…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We are from Sydney, Australia.
How did you meet?
For the current band lineup, we met each other online through a Facebook ad I created, in the search for band . As my stepdad is a drummer I asked him if he would be keen to play drums. We have been through several lineup changes over the years.
How long have you been playing as a band?
The current lineup is quite new, as we just recently found our new guitarist Jaz. So with Jaz about 4 months. Previous line up 3 years.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
I actually thought of the band name before I started the band. I’ve always been interested in all things supernatural, especially witches. I wanted the band name to reflect that. First I came up with Wicca Envy, which seemed cool, inspired by the witches coven, soon after I was brainstorming ideas and thought Wicked Envy had a nice ring to it. So I decided to hold on to that name, cause it’s quite unique and here we are.
What are your influences?
As a band we draw influence from many different genres and artists. As we prefer not to be categorised as one specific genre of music. Some influences include: The Pretty Reckless, Black Veil Brides, The Smashing Pumpkins, Halestorm and Metallica.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
I believe our bassist’s playing style and tone is quite unique, as it sounds like a second guitar at times and switches between a heavy, dirty tone to a more smooth, atmospheric sound. Also, my deep growls and gutsy screams are quite a different element used to make us stand out from others in rock n’ roll, with a heavier element.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
No, not really I usually write the lyrics before the melody and then the rest follows. It depends on how I feel in the moment of writing. Sometimes I write the music and melody first. I do like to rhyme some of my phases in our songs, if it works of course.
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
If you come and see Wicked Envy live you can expect a massive night of dark, theatrical fun, spilling out all the upbeat enthusiasm and melodic emotional feels. We use props onstage so you feel as if your stepping into an unknown or thrilling realm.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Mmm, nothing too wild yet, but I’ve started using fake blood onstage for the thrill factor. As for other bands, I have seen some singers climb up onto massive stage amp and speakers and jump off from a great height. I have also seen the singer of a particular band kick himself in the face and accidentally knock himself out for the rest of the show. Now that’s pretty wild!
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

- Jackson RR
- Jackson Soloist
- Boss GT-100 effects pedal
- 5150 80w iconic series

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
We have just released our debut EP What The Hell Am I Doing and have 3 shows in Sydney. We are ing TerrorBite at Kelly’s On King Friday 1st July. Hitting up the famous Frankies Pizza on Saturday 16th July and headlining our EP launch party at The Duke on Saturday 23rd July with great friends 51st Avenue.
Plenty of stuff to be excited for.
What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?
We will be promoting our new music, writing new music and might have a mini-tour in the works.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
Oh wow this is a tough one, if it’s local bands, as there’s so many we would love to !
Opening Band – Wicked Things
Headlining Band – Vilify
