Headline Act: Andy Welsh

Before we rebranded this feature, it was “New Band of the Day”, and that would have suited today’s artist down to the ground. With a lot of experience in other forms (you may know him from The Scene), Andy Welsh is taking new steps with his solo career. Working on single releases for the moment, there’s a sample of his wares towards the bottom of this article and at least one new song due for release soon. But we’ll ket Andy tell you all about that…

Simple things first – where are you from?

Hell with a U (Hull)

How did you meet the people you’re working with on this project?

It was through my producer Pat Dooner at Elements Studio in Hull, thanks to an intro from Singer Lyn Acton and Film Maker Mal Williamson.

How long have you been playing / recording?

Just over a year.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

My birth certificate (as I’m a solo artist with a band!).

What are your influences?

Atlantic, Stax, Tamla, The Kinks and the Action.

Good songs, great musicians and production. I surround myself with good people.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Tongue in cheek angst!

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Loud and energetic. Played over 300 gigs with the scene. Andy Welsh will tour for the first time in the autumn.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

My single “Feel Good” out on Detour Records on limited edition vinyl plus all other streaming services.

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

Follow up single already in the pipeline for a May release then back in the studio to start on first Album. And loads of live gigs from autumn ’24!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be ing and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Paul Weller and The Fallen Leaves.
