Interview: Below A Silent Sky

Below A Silent Sky are a post-metal band from Ilmenau, who in 2015 came up with their debut full-length album Corrosion. We caught up with the band during the Christmas break, and they told us about Corrosion, scene, touring.

Hey guys. How are you doing?

We are fine, thanks. We are enjoying our christmas time.

You released “Corrosion” back in September. How do you feel about the release?

We are proud of it and we already sold more CD’s than we thought.

How much of a challenge was it to work on the album?

It took a lot of work to write and define the songs. We had a little pressure because the process of recording started in June and our first gig of the tour was already planed for the end of september.

CorrosionHow is the post-metal scene in your area these days?

There are a lot of people who are into post-metal but there is no real post-metal band scene in our area. You could say that most of the bands here are situated in the alternative Rock/Metal or Hardcore genre.

What is your opinion about the new wave of metal bands?

It doesn’t matter if it’s a wave, trend or something like that as long as the music is fascinating for us.

Can you tell me something about your influences?

Every single bandmember has it’s own influences in different music genres. The range embraces Jazz, Blues, Progressive, Alternative, Stoner Rock, Doom and of course Post-Rock and Post-Metal. Aside from these musical aspects daily experiences also have an impact on our creative process.

What are you listening to these days?

WHAM ;-)
We have discovered the bands YOB, O’Brother, Mono and AHAB for us.

Your five favourite records of all time?

Tool – Lateralus
YOB – Clearing The Path To Ascend
Reuben – Racecar Is Racecar Backwards
AHAB – The Giant
The Ocean – Pelagial

Can you tell me a little bit more about the gear you used to record “Corrosion ”?

We used Engl and Blackstar Amps for the guitars, Ibanez and PRS Guitars, Musicman Basses and Glockenklang and Orange Amps for the Bass.

Besides the release of the album, are there any other plans for the future?

During the next years we want to play as many gigs as possible in and Europe. Of course we will write new material to record another album in the future. It would be great to find a nice label which s us with booking and promotion. But until this happens we will write many Emails, perform calls and get in touch with people and other Bands to enlarge our reach and expand our community.

Any words for the potential new fans?

Don’t be shy to get in with the bands you are fascinated in. If you have the chance to talk with them after a gig give your to the musicians. I can`t believe that any artist would not be happy about it. Positive is finally the biggest profit.
