Norwegian musicians Oak talk about their masterpiece “Lighthouse” and more.
Alright, first thing is first. Before we dive into all the music stuff, how’s life?
It’s great! We’ve just released Lighthouse and received a lot of good after our concert in Oslo. Right now we’re enjoying the summer, spending some days out of the studio.
Speaking of new music, you have an album. What can people expect from “Lighthouse”?
It can be considered a melancholic journey of sorts with a wide variety of musical expressions and atmospheres – catchy and haunting. We`d like to think that people will discover something that hasn’t been done before and that the album truly will grow on you.
What was it like working on the album?
It’s been time consuming work but extremely rewarding. We’re all very thorough in what we do in of music, so we could feel like things were moving a bit slowly at times, but the process was interesting and inspiring from start to finish.
Are there any touring plans in to “Lighthouse”?
It’s in the works, but we haven’t set any dates yet.
While we are on the subject of touring, what countries would you love to tour?
We’d travel anywhere the music takes us, and if there’s good food and wine where we’re going – that’s a nice bonus.
Who and what inspires you the most?
A lot of our songs have been inspired by journeys and significant events. The lyrics are often inspired by dreams and late night philosophy, and there’s of course a huge number of bands, composers and artists who inspires us. You have to get out there and do something to gather inspiration, it’s hard to come up with something special if you’re just sitting in the studio.
What other genres of music do you listen to? Have any of the other genres you listen to had any impact on your playing?
It’s easier to name a few genres that doesn’t inspire us, since we’re quite open minded in of preferences. We listen to anything from classical music and film scores to electronica and heavier music as long as there is quality to it, but the influence isn’t necessarily obvious. Some common favorites and sources of inspiration among the band are Porcupine Tree, Ulver, Opeth, Tool and Simon & Garfunkel.
