Here we go again… Last year we covered every band on the Hobgoblin New Blood and Jagermeister stages in the run-up to Bloodstock 2015. This year, we’re going one better and aim to have interviews from all the bands on those two stages as well as all of those on the SOPHIE stage prior to the event kicking off on August 11th. That’s almost 100 interviews to get online for you lucky people over the course of the next couple of weeks. I bloody love this job, but you lot owe me a beer at Catton Hall, right?
Thanks to all the bands who’ve taken the time to respond!
Far From History – Hobgoblin New Blood Stage, Sunday
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We are from Herts & Essex, the local towns of Harlow, Bishops Stortford & Ugley… Yes, Ugley!
How did you meet?
Oh! This is a funny one, we all met through our love of music and rad shenanigans at a very young age! Each and everyone of us was looking for a band, especially after we just left school. Our Drummer, Paul was forming a band called If All Else Fails along with today’s Bassist Ed Connor, but he was performing in guitar in the band at this time. Working towards a show in at a local festival called “Swag fest”… You heard, “Swag Fest.”
They played the show along with some from school and college. After their set, Tony, Today’s front man, performed a solo acoustic act, Paul and Ed immediately thought “we need this guy” and befriended Tony and complimented him on his skill. So we all decided to meet up one for a practice. Tony, Ed and Paul all jamming in a room having blast before you know it!
Rudi who was in a band with Tony beforehand heard of these practices and immediately wanted in. All we wanted to do was write metal and that’s that. So we all met up and got on like a house on fire, writing riffs wherever we could with whatever we could, we’d actually all sit in our drummers shed at the bottom of his garden and play until late.
A year down the line and we were writing our first EP with the single “Dreamcatcher”. Aidan came along and offered us the insane knowledge of metal he has to give to us. Tony wanted to expand his vocals and focus on screaming and singing. That’s when the beast of a man himself ed. Which now makes to this day, Tony, Ed, Rudi, Aidan & Paul… Far From History!
How long have you been playing together as a band?
We’ve all been in bands before but together as of August we would have been Far From History for 4 years. We established in 2012.
Where does the name of the band come from?
The band name to us means we are far from our past, never looking back, but learning from your past events. Through youth and adolescence you have some hard times. Sticking together as friends (the family you choose) and pulling through. We all have our demons, regrets and problems but we will learn from them as much as possible.
Learning from our mistakes and decisions we have made. Leaving the bad ones to dust but taking the good either us. It means to be established. To be far from your history. To become from it. But we’ve been a long way in our history to become who we are as individuals nows. Far From History means to learn from your past, but never forget it. How it has shaped you but how it will never stand in your way.
What are your influences – individually or as a band?
We love metal to the bottom of our hearts, but we also love the punk side of things too. To always have fun, but go hard or go home! Bands such as Killswitch Engage, Breaking Benjamin and Periphery we adore. They’re writing style is unique and has shaped, our favourite sub genre of metal, metalcore, to this day.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
We simply don’t stick to the same genre constantly, metal has A MASSIVE category of sub genres and we explore them all! Metal-core, thrash, djent, hardcore… the lot! We do it all! Even all at once within some songs. We don’t believe to stick to one thing, we write what we feel like writing and what feels good at heart.
What’s your live show like – why should the baying hordes troop over to the stage you’re playing on to watch you?
Energy energy energy. Get pumped. Get excited. Get rowdy. We go hard or go home. Literally there is no time to stand still and wonder what the f*ck is going on. Fast, quick and heavy metal is all you will get! If you came to throw down, Mosh, in sing along! We are the band for you!
When/how did you find out you’d been selected to play at Bloodstock?
We were deeply humbled to win Metal 2 The Masses 2016 Bedfordshire and none other than Simon himself announced us to play Bloodstock!
What sort of setlist can we expect?
A mash up of metalcore, hardcore and thrash metal!
Which main stage band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?
Definately Heart of a Coward, they are simply fat and a massive influence on our writing style at the moment! We love how heavy they are and simply crushing their riffs are – boom! We don’t want to miss them for the world!
What are you working on at the moment?
We are working on the release of our EP Gallows Hill which releases on all online music stores such as iTunes and Spotify August 19th (just after Bloodstock).
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done on tour?
What haven’t we done that’s simply outrageous! Haha! We always have fun and go nuts… Sounds cliché when we say we go hard, but boy there’s been times where we’ve been hammered after playing shows, running naked through streets, doing flips off of beds in hotels, not knowing where all the band are… There’s so much! If you ever get the chance to party with us… Let’s party hard!
What advice would you give to a young band just starting out today?
Be yourself, not anyone else. Don’t let anyone put you down about what you’re doing. You and you alone control your future! Do whatever makes you happy and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! Play any show you can… But most importantly have fun!
If you could be part of any 3-band line-up who else would you have on the bill? One band above you and one below – a chance to plug a smaller, unsigned act!
- Cane Hill
- Us
- And our buddies in High Rise
