Prior to their show in Glasgow, I had the chance to chat with the legend that is Lars Goran Petrov (Aka L-G Petrov). After having discussed firstly how cold it was on that night, we got straight down to business…
How’s the tour been going so far?
It’s been great and everyone knows how the days work. We’re quite a way in now so some people are a little tired but we’re all getting along fine!
We’re looking forward to a good show tonight as it’s sold out. It’s not a big room, but a sold out show is a sold show!
Dead Dawn, the latest album came out a few months ago now. How do you feel the response has been?
Very well actually! We’ve been touring a lot and people seem to really liking it. We’ve been bringing a lot of vinyl and CD’s to our shows so if people can’t find it locally, they can find it at our shows.
Musically we’re really satisfied with it and we’ve already started working on new material for the next album. So we’re very efficient now. There’s no ‘laying about’, aside from on the tour bus!
In light of this, how do feel the year has been for the band?
It’s going better than in our previous years because we’re now out and touring and doing what bands are supposed to do you know. I mean, we do have other projects but if you’re efficient with your time then you are able to fit everything in.
What are the bands plans for next 6 to 12 months?
We’ve got December off and then we’re off to states early next year and we’ll also try to fit in recording another album. And then cycle continues on.
I mean, some days are tough but it’s good fun you know! I was suffering from terrible toothache earlier on this tour and I was finally able to visit the dentist in Dublin. She took one look in my mouth and was like “That needs to come out!” So she removed it and then I had a vodka later on and was absolutely fine!
In the past 12-18 months have there been any new bands that have caught your eye?
We get a lot of cd’s given to us so we stack them up on the bus and go through them. We then sometimes mail the bands and say what we think of them which we quite enjoy doing. It’s always good to be honest whether it’s good or bad and it’s good to see that there’s still the interest in music. It does take a long time to go through them though as there are a lot of bands out there! You’re always learning as well and gaining new influences for your music as well so it can sometimes be difficult to ensure that you don’t end up copying another band!
I’d actually not heard Lord Dying before prior to this tour, and they’re super good. I’ve really been enjoying watching them play.
Keeping with the theme of new bands, is there any advice you give to them?
Just keep and going and doing what you are doing. Don’t expect success overnight as well. If you’re stuck in the rehearsal room for 10 years, still keep going, as you’ll get there eventually. Try to get your music out as much as possible and play as many shows as you can. Call up promoters and venues and continually ask them if you can play.
Don’t get pissed or tired if you don’t make it immediately. It’s going to take a long time and if you’re not doing it for the music then you’re not really going to enjoy the process.
