#ROADTOBOA2017 – Black Moth

As ever, we’re going to try and cover every single Jäger, New Blood and SOPHIE stage band before Bloodstock kicks off on August 10th. Your chance to check them out and start planning which bands to get there early for!

Trust us when we tell you that this is bound to result in some frustrating clashes because, as ever, there are some great bands on these three stages.

Our thanks to all the bands for taking the time out to answer our questions!

Black Moth – Sophie Lancaster Stage, Friday

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re originally from Leeds but myself and Federica now live in London so there’s a lot of travelling up and down the country.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

Forever! All of us except Federica were in a garage rock band for a few years before Black Moth formed in 2012, which we started when we were babies. It’s safe to say we know each other pretty well by now.

Where does the name of the band come from?

It comes from a favourite poem by Tennessee Williams called “Lament for the Moths”, wherein the moths are the artists of the world, whose delicate spirits are crushed by the mammoths!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Unique… hmm. I guess in a very genre-centric scene, we’re a band that is genuinely a lot more difficult to label. Probably all bands say that but in our case I do believe it’s true. Our influences span a huge range and we’re not in anyway a straight-up doom/stoner/metal band. We couldn’t be if we wanted to be as we’re too weird a collection of people, all from very different backgrounds- from thrash to 60’s garage rock to psych etc. Plus, our vagina to penis ratio is a bit healthier than most of the bands on the scene. Some people dig that…

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another?

It’s hard to answer this question as I go into a bit of a beer and riff fuelled trance… then I look up at the end and see all these sweaty, glowing faces and think- shit, yeah we did something cool. It’s co-created though, and vampiric in that I totally feed off the energy of the crowd. There’s a lot of dynamic to our set too… angry songs, sexy songs, sad songs. No happy songs though. This isn’t Lovestock, is it?

Have you played Bloodstock before? If so, when?

Nope, never!

How/when did you find out that you’d be playing the SOPHIE stage?

I think our bassist was told by Lemmy in a dream and then it came true. Stoked to be playing for The Sophie Lancaster Foundation Stage though – they do such important work against hate crimes. An amazingly positive thing to come out of such a tragedy and I have mountains of respect for her family.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

We’ll be showcasing a fair amount of the new stuff from our impending third album as we all feel it’s our strongest material and we’re extremely excited to be playing it. But of course, we’ll be bringing the “hits” as well – ha!

Which main stage band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

Testament. I think Federica is going to cry or something as she’s been listening to them since she was 13.

What are you working on at the moment?

We’re putting the finishing touches to artwork etc. for album three, due for release in October! Also planning a pretty ridiculous video with the amazing Ben Foley who did our video for last single “Looner”, which is always exciting!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Mainly just played some music… heard some music… that’s pretty wild. The axe-wielders of the band quite regularly twat me in the mouth with their headstocks in all the headbanging frenzy, so then I return to the microphone spitting blood and nobody really knows why but they assume it must be because we’re so wild. It’s a win/win. I think.

Jager, Hobgoblin Ale, Kraken, Kingstone Press Cider, Kaltenberg Beer or Bulleit Bourbon? And, yes, we’ll be counting all the votes!

All of the above. No? Mean. OK Kraken for me, I’m a rum girl through and through.
