Before Amon Amarth invaded the main stage on the Friday night at Bloodstock, we had a quick chat with guitarist Johan about their stage show, his photography hobby and his favourite place to play in the world. Read on for the full transcription…

Firstly, how are you doing?

Not too bad, thanks. I’m looking forward to playing tonight as we have finally been able to bring our full stage show to the UK. We have everything in this stage show; pyro, Vikings on stage…everything. It’s fun to finally bring what we do at festivals in mainland Europe to the UK.

How did you get into photography?

I got into about a year and half ago and after some time I figured it was worth getting a proper camera. I then got a camera and I like shooting a bit of everything. I love exploring so that’s kinda reflected in my photos.

What would you say is your favourite place to play?

I’d probably have to say South America. The fans there are so dedicated and the shows are always fun there.

Getting onto the topic of guitars, how did you end up with the light in your guitar?

I fitted that myself actually. I don’t use the neck pickup, only the bridge one so I figured it was worth creating something unique in it. It makes it a bit more interesting and makes use of what would be an empty space.

Are you guys still using Kempers on stage?

Yep, still using Kempers. We’ve been using them since Deceiver of The Gods, and they free up so much stage space. We try and vary the profiles we use across the tours as it keeps things fresh. We’re currently using a variation on the EVH 5150 which sounds really good.

Describe the band in three words.

Powerful Viking metal.
