With Wacken XXX looming up to stomp its big metal footprint on again this summer, we’re taking a look at a bunch of the bands who are hitting its iconic stages for the first time. Today we feature a band who I’m hoping aren’t as scary in person as they look in their publicity photo…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We’re a band hailing from Utrecht, The Netherlands.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
Baby Face Nelson was a bank robber from the 1930’s. We tried to go with Pretty Boy Floyd as a band name first, but that was to difficult to pronounce ;)
Describe your music. Who are your musical influences?
In our mind we play Johnny Cash songs. In reality we are not able to play real American Nashville country, so it turns into loud, mean trash country, influenced by bands like the Ramones, Motörhead and Hank III.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
The usual country music themes: heartache, slumbering alcoholism and a lot of songs about the devil.
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
We played around 250 shows across the European mainland. During a show we try to drive the energy of ourselves and the audience up (and the beer sales of course!). If you like standing in the back of the room with your arms crossed, there is always another nice indie show you could go to.
In the end everyone should just have a good time, because it’s a Saturday night! (or any other weekday for that matter)
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Of course we have seen our share of broken equipment, broken bottles and broken teeth. But some shows are more extraordinary than others. We once played a show at a motorbike meeting where the only way onto the festival grounds was across the stage. You can imagine that we had to crank up the volume to get above the roaring engines. That only stands second to the time the locals decided that the party wasn’t complete until the livestock was brought into the hall we were playing. That was also a strange experience.
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
Our second album Pistola, which was released last year. Hopefully all killers, no fillers.
Other than Wacken, what are your plans for 2019?
Play a lot of other nice shows and festivals across Europe and start writing some new tearfilled tunes.
What are you most looking forward to at Wacken this year?
First of all we will just be trying to survive all the free beers. Second we are of course looking forward to see Nashville Pussy, The BossHoss and ultimately Slayer!
