It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here are Kinzoku who play the New Blood Stage on Saturday.
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
Originally Bobby is from Guernsey, Laurence is from Woking, Jack is from Peterborough and Alex is from Italy – we now all live in Brighton and met at BIMM.
How long have you been playing together as a band?
We started playing together about 5 years ago as we covered “Walk With Me In Hell” by Lamb of God for a BIMM exam.
Where does the name of the band come from?
Initially the name of the band was “Monolith” but we found out that another metal band existed with that name. We then started looking at different languages to find something original with some sort of meaning and we found ‘Kinzoku’ which means “metal” in Japanese.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
We have a mix of influences, ranging from thrash, djent to metal-core. The most ‘unique’ thing about our songwriting is the fact that we write in standard tuning which is becoming fairly rare in the metal scene.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
We’ve had 5 years of perfecting our live show playing in a wide variety of venues. Since lockdown we’ve been crafting our live show and taking it to the next level, implementing lights, backing tracks and professional production techniques. Our focus since releasing the EP has been making sure that our performances are captivating for all audiences.
Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?
None of us have been to Bloodstock before but it’s always been a goal we wanted to achieve ever since the formation of the band.
Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?
We won the Brighton heat of Metal to the Masses.
Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?
We believe one word is probably better than 10, ‘STOKED’.
What sort of setlist can we expect?
We will be playing our debut EP in its entirety which is a blend of thrash, metal, djent and prog.
Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?
Definitely Sylosis, Conjurer and Jinjer. They are massive influences of ours so would love to be able to see their sets.

What are you working on at the moment?
We’re practising as much as possible to get ready for Bloodstock and we’re planning on writing our debut album right after the festival.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
One of us saw the vocalist of a band singing inside of a recycling bin.
What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?
Plenty of water, staying hydrated is our top priority, especially during a heat wave!
