#RoadToBOA2021 – Milliner

We had a breather last year, but again we’re aiming to bring you a little bit of info about as many bands as possible who will be featuring at this year’s Bloodstock Festival. Hitting the Jagermeister Stage on the Thursday (due to the extra day being added) are Milliner…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Huddersfield, West Yorkshire

How long have you been playing together as a band?

Three long and gruelling years

Where does the name of the band come from?

We’re both on our way to being bald and always use the aids of hats to cover up our dirty little secret so therefore called ourselves Milliner which is in fact a traditional hat maker.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We are a 2 piece band but sound like we are 3/4 people on stage. I guess what makes us unique is the fact that I don’t believe we sound like any other band and you can’t really put us into a specific genre. We just do what we like and don’t really stick to any set of rules musically. We just play what we like.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Our show is just a non stop barrage of riffs and head banging. There is no let up and no bullshit talking. I personally hate when I hear a band wasting time telling me the title of a song or that their merch is on sale at the back of the room. I’ve been to gigs before and I know that there are shirts for sale. Play a damn song. Rant over

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

Unfortunately not! We are Bloodstock virgins and ready to be fucked.

We both have been touring a lot over the last 5/6years with different projects and mainly only get to go to the festivals we are playing at. We always choose playing a show over attending one. We’re very excited to be finally attending and to be a part of the UK’s biggest metal festival of 2021!

When/how did you find out you’d been selected to play at Bloodstock?

I had emailed Simon and applied to play but honestly didn’t expect to get a slot because I’m aware of how many bands apply to be there. When I received an email back a month later offering us a slot I was fucking stoked! I told Perry who proceeded to dance around at work in the wood cutting yard which received mixed reviews from his colleagues.

After the year that we have all had, getting the news that we were confirmed to play was nothing less than fucking glorious.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

It’s going to be risky but delightful. We have 2 EP releases available on Spotify/iTunes etc so there will be plenty from those two releases. We are currently working on our debut album so there will definitely be a few brand new songs that have never been played live before.

Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

We are good friends with fellow Huddersfield thrashers Evile so we for sure want to see them play and we can’t wait to see Ol Drake stepping up as the vocalist for the first time. You will probably spot us on stage tuning their guitars and setting up the 72 drums Ben uses. I am also super excited for Cradle of Filth as I’ve loved them since I bought a copy of Metal Hammer when I was a kid and it came with a free VHS tape (yes I’m that old) that had the video to Born in a Burial Gown on it. I’ve loved them ever since then. Super stoked While She Sleeps have just been added too. They absolutely smashed it at Pilot.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’ve been pretty busy trying to complete some pretty challenging jigsaws. I’m sure we have all delved into the jigsaw world at some point during lockdown. If you haven’t you’re missing out. I’m currently working on a pretty badass KISS one.

Musically we have just finished pre-production on some songs for our debut album and are talking to some labels. It’s all sounding great and we can’t wait to get in and record the album and get it out!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

The wildest thing I’ve seen is probably Dillinger Escape Plan playing at Leeds Cockpit. There wasn’t a single moment where I knew where all 5 band were. From dangling 29 feet above the crowd and falling in to pulling the PA speakers over, they just cause utter chaos and I love every single second of it.

Craziest thing I’ve done on stage is either when I jumped off the PA system at a festival in and broke my foot but still finished the set or when I was playing to a sold out crowd in Holland and was bursting for a piss. I pissed in a pint glass behind the keyboard stand. Very weird taking a leak and looking out to hundreds of peoples faces who don’t know that you’re taking a piss.

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

Spiced rum and Jäger bombs. We are basic bitches but it gets us feeling nice and fruity.

We will be staying at the festival all weekend so come and find us and let’s drink too much and become best friends.
