#RoadToBOA2021 – Popestars

It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here are Popestars who play the VIP Stage on Thursday.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

The portal to Hell of Tig Guocobauc, modern day Nottingham.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

We were spawned in a crucifix cave on the summer solstice of 2018.

Where does the name of the band come from?

The Clergy chose the name of the third psalm to represent the band.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Popestars perform pop hymns recorded by Ghost that glorify and glamorise the disgusting and sacrilegious.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

A dance party praising Satan, what’s not to like?

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

This will be the first performance of Popestars at Bloodstock, however, of course the music has been performed before when Ghost headlined in 2017. Most have performed and attended Bloodstock for many years, it’s essentially the summer holiday!

When/how did you find out you’d been selected to play at Bloodstock?

Satan finally granted permission this year after a lengthy period of torture, or as you call it, rehearsals.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

The greatest ever set of hymns praising Satan, and actually a few diamonds thrown in for good measure.

What makes it different playing in the VIP area as opposed to “out front”?

Everyone, including the Ghouls, can be closer to the bar with the Mango Cider!

What are you working on at the moment?

We found some new shoes on eBay recently, they’re pretty slinky, so now it’s a matter of fusing them to the feet of the ghouls which is pretty hard, have you seen them? They’re made of steel! Satan could of course do this very easily but has been pretty busy lately with a plague.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

A circle pit at Rock City that went from (the pinnacle to) the pit up one set of stairs, across the balcony, down the other stairs and back to the pit.

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

Body and Blood always goes down well.
