#RoadToBOA2021 – Sound of Origin

It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here are Strangle Wire who play the New Blood Stage on Friday.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Huddersfield, Leeds & Sowerby

How long have you been playing together as a band?

We formed in 2016, Joel ed us on Vocals in 2018 and everything clicked into place from there.

Where does the name of the band come from?

It’s a twist on word’s from Sabbath’s music. Black Sabbath originated the sound that we all know and love today. (The) Sound of (The) Origin is very much an ode to them and what followed musically.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We don’t stick to one particular thing. Yes we are heavy but nothing genre-wise is out of bounds. The centre of our music is based around low & slow riffs, however we have flashes of blues/ funk/ punk/ sludge & thrash metal in there. Joel versatile (& Joe’s gruff) vocal’s means we can now explore everything heavy and beyond.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Energetic/ intense … if you wish to immerse yourself in wall of fuzzy, low end heavy sound with a vocalist of serious dynamic range then give us a try.

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

Jax (Bassist) has worked at the festival several times; Chris has been going since 2008 and was a member of the Rock Society for a few years. Joe has been a few times & it will be Joel’s first time. All very much looking forward to it.

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

Leeds. 11 bands were finalists and due to the show not being able to go ahead, we won through this time on a video competition.

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

Pretty. Fucking. Sweet. J

What sort of setlist can we expect?

Looking at a 5 song setlist. As it’s a Metal festival we’ve chosen songs we’ve written which will appeal to a more headbanging type of audience.

Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?

The circumstances surrounding this festival and how the team have put it together just showcases what an unbelievable wealth of talent the UK has when it comes to heavy music. The bands on the main stage speak for themselves (Priest, Devin, The Wildhearts, OG, Therapy) but the other stages are absolutely stacked with amazing bands …Garganjua, Pist, Dog Tired, Speedhorn, Conan, Elder Druid, Video Nasties, King Witch, Green Lung, Lowen, Wall, Son Of Boar and of course Napalm Death. So many more we want to see tbh

What are you working on at the moment?

We have studio time booked for later on in the year. Looking at releasing 1 (possibly 2) albums in 2022.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

The Deftones pit at Rock Am Ring in (2006) got so out of hand (thousands of people just went over on the floor … it was like dominoes falling) that Chino stopped the show until he knew that everyone was back up safe and sound (Chris)

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

Maybe have a beer before we go on. We used to indulge a little too much at the beginning when we first got together but these days its show first, fun later.
