It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here are Bile Caster who play the Jagermeister stage on the Saturday.
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We’re based in Leicester although Adam (drums) is from Birmingham and Nick (bass) is from London. Joe (vocals/guitar) is the only member born and bred here.
How long have you been playing together as a band?
Our first jam as a three piece was in August 2019 followed by our first gig in September 2019.
Where does the name of the band come from?
Our vocalist/guitarist Joe thought of the name, it’s the title of a Mangle song, a bloody good hardcore/powerviolence band from Leicester that unfortunately don’t play anymore. We play a lot with the hardcore punk bands here so it’s quite fitting.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
We play bleak and oppressive sludge/doom metal and also utilise noise and blackened elements, our goal is to write the nastiest music we can overall, but the backbone is definitely sludge. We are unrelenting in our negative approach to the music and stick to our guns in that respect.
What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
We definitely go for a gloomy atmosphere while playing and don’t tend to do much in the way of traditional showmanship, we play our tunes aggressively and as loud as possible. Our set will definitely be a different experience to a lot of the bands that are playing, so for that reason alone it’s worth checking us out. Bring your earplugs.
Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?
Adam and Joe have been to Bloodstock many times, they basically go every year so obviously love it. This will be Nick’s first time at Bloodstock, he can’t wait.

When/how did you find out you’d been selected to play at Bloodstock?
We received an email from Simon Hall a few weeks ago offering us a slot on the Jager stage. He’d seen our set at the M2TM Leicester final and shortlisted us to possibly play, so it was amazing to get that email!
What sort of setlist can we expect?
Four angry sludge tunes! Two new and two old. We’ve been playing this set for a little while now and it’s a solid representation of what we’re about.
Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?
Doubt we’ll be clashing with them but we are all very excited to watch Mercyful Fate!
What are you working on at the moment?
We have new songs written (two of which we’ll be playing at Bloodstock) and will be recording them at the end of this year or very early next year. At the moment we are getting the songs ready to record and are making sure we don’t rush anything so we’re taking our time with them.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
We’re not really a wild band haha but, not too long ago we were playing a gig in Leicester and halfway through the set a stream of water began to pour from the ceiling straight onto the stage. Turns out someone living above the venue was having a shower, so we finished the song (probably should have stopped instantly) but had to cut the set short so that little issue could be fixed.
What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?
Mostly beer for us before a set, maybe water if we’re feeling responsible.
