It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here are Deadlock Saints who play the Jagermeister stage on the Sunday.
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We’re based in Leeds, however Jack is from Dudley, Billy is from Newark, Stu was born in Cyprus. Josh is the only true blooded Yorkshireman in the band. He actually still lives in a coal pit.
How long have you been playing together as a band?
The band has been together for roughly six years. Josh and Billy are the OGs while Stu and Jack were later additions.
Where does the name of the band come from?
One day Josh, being the avid video game enthusiast that he is, was reclining against his waifu body pillow, reading from his favourite Overwatch graphic novel, Deadlock Rebels. His gaze lifted, and from the brim of his fedora he spied his copy of Saints Row. Like Mountain Dew and Doritos, he had found the perfect combination: Deadlock Saints.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
We aren’t afraid to call us what we are: cheesy sleazy Dad-Rock laden heavy metal. Simple stuff. Riffs, solos, singalong choruses about 69ing, all the usual go to’s you’ve come to know and love.
What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
A Deadlock Saints gig is the party to which everyone is invited. Jack’s captivating but approachable energy as a front man will hook in all comers, while Billy and Stu’s onstage shenanigans will ride you through each and every pint. Josh will be playing drums.
Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?
Jack and Josh are regular attendees, and they bloody love it. The atmosphere is second to none, and they get to drink four days away. What more could you ask for? Billy and Stu are going to experience the carnage for the first time, but as Saints we know they’ll be able to handle it.

When/how did you find out you’d been selected to play at Bloodstock?
We found out at the Leeds final of Metal To The Masses, along with our brothers Pariah who are playing the New Blood Stage. Big ups to Si Hall, and Matt and Jimmy who run Leeds M2TM.
What sort of setlist can we expect?
Like any Deadlock gig expect us to cover all the topical issues of the world today: beer and sex. We’re keeping the tempo up and the vibes upper.
Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?
If we clash with Heriot or Cattle Decapitation Jack will be a sad sad boy. All work and no play…
What are you working on at the moment?
We’re assuming that all of the major labels’ invitations to their respective rosters keep getting lost in the post, so while we wait for the inevitable, we’re in the process of self-producing a three track EP to follow up from our latest single ‘0 to 69.’ Drums are fully tracked, but in classic bass player fashion when it came to the third piece to track, Stu had learned the song wrong.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
We had a tentful of people rocking the barrier and feeding us beer at Leeds Unity Day a few years back. Billy’s had a crowd of people in the Fenton (Leeds’ premier drinking saloon) chanting “shit in my mouth”. With great power comes great responsibility. At last year’s Bloodstock, King Corpse’s soundcheck rocked the tent so hard that a beam fell down. Good band those KC boys.
What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?
Nothing gets the blood pumping like chamomile tea, darling, but no caffeine for us after 5pm.
