It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here are FyreSky who play the New Blood Stage on Friday. Want to check them out beforehand? Then have a gander at the tour dates in the poster further down!
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
The darkest reaches of the locked room your parents made you swear to never open…. haha, that being said, Kent and Essex, we’re pretty widespread but the forbidden room sounded more interesting!
How long have you been playing together as a band?
Gabriel and Kris: we’ve been working together in bands for the last 10 years, Nicole has been with us for the better part of 3, and Bruce has been on the drums for us under a year so far!
Where does the name of the band come from?
The band name came from when Gabriel used to do early morning shift work, and watching the dawn it looked like the sky was on fire. But with a Y, because it’s better that way!
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
The music is a jumble of genres from Goth, to hard rock, to classical, to metal. The whole point is to not stick to one specific sound. There’s roaring guitars and thunderous bass and drums, all behind sensual lyrics that can move from a suggestive whisper to a mournful howling; keyboards dot the soundscape with doses of pretty, then it all comes crashing back to catchy anthems. Something for everyone?
What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
It’s a group of miserable goths throwing themselves about on the stage with ironic smiles on our faces, to catchy songs with a sense of humour unbecoming of what’s expected of us.
If there’s one thing we love, it’s to make a spectacle of it! From the look to the sound to the energy on stage its an all out show. We’re celebrating weird, wild, and darkly wonderful. We’ve recently been called Goth Metal with a sense of humour and to be honest we love that!

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?
Kris has been several times, and she’s called it a fantastic and inclusive haven for all the weirdos regardless of their origin. She’s described to us the sheer non-stop musical mayhem, with great drinks, great food, a greater community and epic times. We’re really looking forward to it!
Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?
We crashed through M2TM Kent! Proud to be representing a really solid music scene where the bands and audiences alike are all looking out for each other, welcoming people, and cheering each other on.
Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?
(a wide mix all at once!) Probably; Disbelief, incredulity, humility, fear, love, ecstasy, and Gratitude.
What sort of setlist can we expect?
A little something of everything special we’ve got, some of our older tracks that speak for all, and some of our newest songs we haven’t even released yet!
Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?
A lot of them! Although it’s highly unlikely that our slot time clashes with greats like Behemoth, Jinjer, Dark Tranquility, Dimmu Borgir, and others! (Shout to fellow somewhat-Essex-colleagues Existentialist – M2TM Essex winners, Collected, the wild card option, and to Silen from Kent who will all be treading the boards of BOA with us)

What are you working on at the moment?
How about a 14 track album? Too soon? *evil smirk commences*
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Although we weren’t there… would that Brass Against moment count? (Google it if you dare)
What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?
Gabriel often knocks back the really hard stuff, Lemon and Ginger Tea! Nicole? Don’t let her near the moonshine or Cloven Hoof Rum, Kris? Crown Royal usually, and Bruce? Likely something stronger than the rest of us!
