Road To Bloodstock 2022 – I Fight Bears

It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here Scott Preece (drums) from recent Headline Act I Fight Bears who play the New Blood stage on the Friday.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re all from South Wales, in and around the Bridgend area

How long have you been playing together as a band?

I think we’ve been playing together for around 6 years or more now, time flies when you’re having fun!

Where does the name of the band come from?

We tried a good amount of ‘sensible’ names at first which all seemed to be taken already. So while we were still debating a close friend of the band suggested the name ‘I FIGHT BEARS’ after the movie The Revenant was released, so we thought why the hell not?!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We try to incorporate a wide variety of musical styles, both old and new. Then we try to add our own flavour in there. Lots of heavy, lots of melody. Something for everybody.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Our live show is something we work really hard on, we spend a lot of time trying to perfect how we perform and how the show comes across.

We also have a full lighting rig which works synchronously with our set for maximum impact. If anybody is paying to come and watch us at a show, we want to make sure they go away happy.

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

I personally haven’t been, but other have. I have actually never been to a festival at all let alone played one, so I am super looking forward to Bloodstock. What a festival to have as your first!

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

We won the South Wales M2TM. The events were put together so flawlessly and we had an absolute ball competing, all the other bands were incredible. Win or lose, we would have walked away from there with massive smiles all around.

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

Surreal. Absolutely surreal!

What sort of setlist can we expect?

We’ll be playing a range of songs that we think best showcase our sound as a band. From the melodic moments to the breakdowns, there will be something for everybody to enjoy and we’re definitely aiming for sore necks in the morning!! It’s going to get messy!

Which other bands do you most hope you’re not squished up next to so you can see them play?

Honestly, it sounds a little cliché, but to miss any band playing in the festival is such a shame!! That being said though, we’re happy that we will be free to watch Lamb Of God tear it up!

What are you working on at the moment?

We’re currently deep in the writing process of our next EP and smashing as many shows as we can in the meantime!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

At a recent show we played. a particularly brutal pit broke out, then something magical happened. I glanced at the crowd only to notice some kid fully break dancing in the middle of the pit. What a hero.

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

I’m going to sound very boring here, but I only ever drink water before I play a gig. Afterwards though, Bumbu spiced rum is a winner. Neat, no cola!
