It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here is Nekrogoblikon’s guitarist, Alex. The band play the Sophie stage on the Thursday.
We are originally from Barcelona, Spain but our rented rehearsal space was in Los Angeles so we decided to move there to shorten the commute.
How long have you been playing together as a band?
We don’t play together as a band. When the songs are finished being composed by John Goblikon on a Chili’s napkin, we photocopy them and send them to anonymous musicians around the world to individually record their parts and then we put it together in the end. During our live shows while we’re on stage these anonymous musicians are the ones actually performing via a Zoom conference operated by one of our 18 stage laptops. And I know what you’re thinking, “then what’s the rehearsal space for?” We’re still trying to figure that out ourselves.
Where does the name of the band come from?
“Nekrogoblik” is an old Latin word meaning “Music”. We added the “on” because we figured music is better when it’s on than when it’s off.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
We have drums.
What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?
We spend the entirety of the set throwing money into the audience, so if you are fond of money you might want to see our show instead of someone else’s (unless they also throw money into the audience).

Have you played Bloodstock before? If so, when?
We’ve played every Bloodstock since 2005 but under different names.
How/when did you find out that you’d be playing the SOPHIE stage?
Via a fax delivered by an orphan/November 19th, 1984.
What sort of setlist can we expect?
The setlist will contain 11 back-to-back covers of “Big Truck” by Coal Chamber and it will be laminated.
Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?
The Barenaked Ladies aren’t playing the same time as us, are they?
What are you working on at the moment?
Answering these questions as seriously as I can.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
I once saw a band that had a goblin jumping around on stage. How stupid!
What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?
We each chug an entire gallon of milk before going on stage, which I’m told helps us sound better.
