Road to Bloodstock 2022 – Noctem

It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here is Beleth, vocalist of Noctem who play the Sophie Stage on the Sunday afternoon.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Noctem we are from Valencia Spain. It is the third largest city in Spain in the Mediterranean area.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

Noctem started as a project in April 2001. Varu (bass) and Voor (drums) ed the band in January 2015, Moss (guitars) ed us in 2019 and Tobal (guitars) started the project with me but left the band in 2001 and ed us again in 2021.

Where does the name of the band come from?

Noctem is a Latin word meaning noche (Night).

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

According to the media, Noctem is described as different and unique due to its long history playing black metal mixed with death and thrash using sections with Spanish guitars. Honestly, it’s not very common to find Black Metal bands that come from Spain and do the shows that we do.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

I think it’s something that people have to see to understand it. Our shows are fast, aggressive and full of blood. I’m sure people can get an idea just by watching a video of our live shows on YouTube.

Have you played Bloodstock before? If so, when?

Not yet. We toured the UK a lot but we never played there. This is going to be our first time – we can’t wait.

How/when did you find out that you’d be playing the SOPHIE stage?

This is something that was handled by our Echelon Talent Agency booking agency. We agreed to all . We don’t care too much about the size of the stage or whatever – when we play festivals we just focus on putting on our best show and connecting with people.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

A set list composed of the most representative Noctem songs from the last 5 albums. It is a set that all the maniacs who are going to be there will enjoy.

Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

We don’t think so. Honestly, we don’t care.

What are you working on at the moment?

Right now we are preparing to release our new album, Credo Certe Ne Cras, with MNRK Heavy for the fall of this year. It’s a lot of work but this is what happens when you work with such huge and professional label. We are very happy with them and we can’t wait to release this new material.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Can I make a list? hahaha There are thousands of weird things we do on stage and sometimes they are dangerous – nobody knows when a mic stand is going to fly, but I think these risks are part of the show.

I probably one of the weirdest things I saw when we were playing was a totally drunk guy masturbating furiously in front of us in the crowd…nice guy.

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

Pig blood.
