Road To Bloodstock 2023: Wolfbastard

Our regular run-down of as many of the Bloodstock bands as we can get to talk to us! Wolfbastard play the SOPHIE stage on the Friday…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re all originally from the Oldham/Greater Manchester area.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

The band first starting making music in about 2012. Which is over ten years ago now, which is mad.

Where does the name of the band come from?

It’s probably just a rip-off of Wolfbrigade with the word ‘bastard’ shoe-horned in.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Our music is a mix of Black Metal and punk. However there is large down-to-earth element about it, with songs about fighting in kebab shops and being sick.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Our live shows are raw and unrelenting in their speed. The songs are usually interjected with crude humour, shit jokes and “üghhh”s.

Have you played Bloodstock before? If so, when?

This is our first appearance at the festival. Dez performed with Foetal Juice in 2021, opening the main stage which was great.

How/when did you find out that you’d be playing the SOPHIE stage?

We got a message sometime after Christmas. We were naturally very pleased.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

A bunch of songs off our latest album Hammer the Bastards, with a few older songs chucked in there too. Hopefully we won’t forget to play one like we did at Incineration Festival.

Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

We’re actually clashing with Wytch Hazel who’d we’d want to watch, but we’ll have to live with it. We’re really looking forward to watching Abbath, Triptykon and Gutalax, amongst others.

What are you working on at the moment?

We’re taking bookings for the rest of the year, including our first trip to Ireland, and we’re about to get started on writing new stuff.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

We’ve had a few mad ones over the years. I playing a pub in Nottingham once we’re at the end of the set there was broken glass everywhere, a skateboard on stage and the fire alarm was going off. Fuck knows what had gone on.

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

When we can’t get our hands on a decent Châteauneuf-du-Pape we usually settle for some Polish lager or cheap cider. Our drummer Dave is more of Evian man these days though.
