Road to Bloodstock 2023: Skin Failure

Our regular run-down of as many of the Bloodstock bands as we can get to talk to us! Skin Failure play the Sophie Lancaster stage on the Saturday…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re from Bristol and Brighton!

How long have you been playing together as a band?

We started the project back in 2020 as a way to stop us from going mad during lockdown. Myself and Paul, our old guitarist, used to live together so we spent a lot of time drinking and thrashing out mad riffs. It was only meant to be a fun little project but it’s got a bit out of hand now – can’t believe people are into these stupid riffs!

Where does the name of the band come from?

Dr Nicholas “Nick” Riviera M.D. from The Simpsons of course!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We blend old school thrash/hardcore riffs with a more proggy mindset. All the fun “fuck you” mentalities from 80’s metal but with the beard-stroking atmosphere of concept albums.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

We just have the most fun possible on stage. If you’re not into the music you play then no one else is going to be! Expect smiles, middle fingers and beers…. lots of beers.

Have you played Bloodstock before? If so, when?

This will be our first time playing this amazing festival – we can’t wait!

How/when did you find out that you’d be playing the SOPHIE stage?

Our agent (the biscotti-scoffing Long Island legend) got in a few months and told us the news – we couldn’t believe it to be honest!

What sort of setlist can we expect?

A furious one. If you like your metal fast, with no coming up for air and completely sleeveless then you’ll be in the right place. And once again, beers….lot’s of beers.

Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

Being thrash heads, Megadeth are getting us very excited. Meshuggah, of course. The teenagers in us are psyched about In Flames and Killswitch Engage. The legends in Employed to Serve always bring it and we’re very excited to catch Tuskar for the first time – they rule!

What are you working on at the moment?

We’re currently working on our second concept album – we don’t want to give too much away but expect some surfy vibes and some of the most crushing riffs we’ve written to date.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Seeing Jordan from Everytime I Die throw up on himself whilst playing was a treat. People front-flipping off the balcony at The Globe in Cardiff during another Everytime I Die show was insane….to be honest every ETID show I’ve ever been too has been nuts. Oh, and seeing that big lad from The Armed yeet his guitar into the crowd was scary as fuck! Some other big lad caught it one handed though, so no one was hurt.

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

This whole band is kind of built around chugging beer and shredding mad riffs so we regularly do a group ritual of shotgunning a beer before going on stage. It’s a great way of ensuring you have heartburn before playing!
