Road To Bloodstock 2024: Divided By Design

Our regular run-down of as many of the Bloodstock bands as we can get to talk to us! Divided By Design play the New Blood stage on the Sunday.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

The band was originally formed in Leeds but are now based in Lincolnshire.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

The band was originally formed seven years ago but the currently line up has been going for just over a  year.

Where does the name of the band come from?

Unlike the rest of our music, the band name had probably the least amount of thought behind it. When the band was created we spent a good few months going through name ideas until we found one that worked for us. We went through a lot of bad ideas and some ok ones before deciding on Divided by Design.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

The easiest way of describing our music would be instrumental progressive metal but our music  covers a lot of genres so that title doesn’t quite do it justice. Divided by Design is very much a mix of metal, jazz fusion, prog, soundtrack music and video game music all glued together by a Steve  Vai/John Petrucci style of guitar playing.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Unlike other technique bands within the scene we pride ourselves on our high energy performances by using all the space on the stage, involving the crowd all whilst performing rather complex parts. So no standing still trying to play perfectly.

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

This will be our first time attending Bloodstock Festival, very excited to discover some new bands.

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

We won the Leeds M2tM competition.

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

Extremely proud and grateful of how far we’ve come.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

A very high energy, intense thirty minute set. We have tracks directly leading into other tracks, definitely making the most of our allotted time.

Stage times haven’t been announced yet, so which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing  with so you can see them play?

Exist Immortal is definitely one we want to catch so hopefully we don’t clash with them. Extremely excited for the headline bands as well, Amon Amarth always puts on an amazing show.

What are you working on at the moment?

We are currently working on a lot of social media content as well as very early stages of  development on our fifth album. Next year also marks the fifth anniversary of our debut album so we may do something special for that, who knows.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Crowd surfing during a guitar solo was definitely a highlight, not a single note was played correctly but it was good fun.

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

Our bass player is very much a Guinness guy, if he gets one before our show then we know it’s going to be a good one.
