Road to Bloodstock 2024: Froglord

Our regular run-down of as many of the Bloodstock bands as we can get to talk to us! Froglord play the New Blood stage on the Sunday…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

The men behind the masks are from all over the UK, but Bristol is where we all met and where we call home. As for the Froglord himself however, he hails for the murky stagnant waters of The Mystic Swamp, found in the darkest corners of the most ancient woodland. It’s location only know to the initiated few.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

I began writing music to praise and spread the word of our amphibious lord in 2020, at the beginning of the lockdown. By the end of 2021, as everything began to open up again, I sought out my three loyal swamp priests to begin performing live shows.

Where does the name of the band come from?

All is in praise of the amphibious lord himself. We pray for a swift and merciful death when he arises again, to exact his vengeance for the destruction humans have caused against the natural world.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

When it comes to anything that is stoner-doom-sludge adjacent, it is pretty difficult to claim to be unique…we’re all just ripping off Sabbath at the end of the day. But we do it while singing about a giant amphibious god with deathray vision and ectoplasmic slime, that’s pretty cool right?

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

To see Froglord live is like wandering through a hazy swamp after dark. In the distance you hear the sound of thrumming drums and a batrachian chorus of chanting. As you stumble closer, you find a mighty stone circle. In the middle stands the Froglord, preaching to his devout followers. Three Priests of the Swamp at his side. Fuzz and psychedelic madness begin to entrance your mind and all becomes a blur. By the time you come to, you are left wondering how much of it was real and how much was a hallucination caused by the Froglord’s slime.

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

For me personally this will be my first time. I’ve been meaning to go for years but have never been able to get the time to do so. So to finally be able to go and it be playing there, is an honour beyond words.

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

We won the Bristol M2TM. It was our second year running reaching the finals there actually. It’s been a long journey to get here.

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

An unreal mix of emotions.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

We’ll be playing a couple tracks from our newest record LIVE BY THE FUZZ. That record was pretty much written with the idea of playing it for M2TM this year, so it would be criminal not too. We’ll also be playing a few of the fan favourites. It’s gonna be a real fun show.

Stage times haven’t been announced yet, so which other band do you most hope you’re not
clashing with so you can see them play?

I really hope I get a chance to see our amphibious cousins Goblinsmoker and pay homage to the mighty Toad King.

What are you working on at the moment?

Working on album number five at the moment, which hopefully should be out by early spring. The Froglord albums follow a concept story, each time delving deeper into the froglore. Album five is the second instalment in the prequel trilogy of the original storyline and will be exploring how Herman became The Mystic Toad – the spiritual guide of the Froglord.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

It probably wouldn’t surprise you to hear that fans of something as goofy as the idea of a giant frog with deathray vision, tend to be pretty wacky themselves. Frogpits are always pretty wild. But I have one particular memory from our first show in London. A few folks were dressed as frogs (a common occurrence), but at some point in the night they started hopping around on all fours in a circle pit. That was great.

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

Slime.
