Road to Bloodstock 2024: Haliphron

Our regular run-down of as many of the Bloodstock bands as we can get to talk to us! Haliphron play the Sophie Lancaster stage on the Friday…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from the Netherlands.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

Well, not very long yet. Haliphron started in late 2021 during the pandemic. We’ve known each other for a lot of years (15+), toured and shared stages together and became friends. Where our bands broke up or were putting on hold during the pandemic, I kept on writing new material in something I didn’t write before. I asked the other to me to record an album and so we started. And we’re still here, stronger than ever and with a new album coming up in October!

Where does the name of the band come from?

The lyrics of our very first song were about a creature in the darkest depths of the ocean. We were looking for a short, strong name that didn’t exist yet. That’s difficult. Marloes (vocalist) found the name Haliphron (from the name haliphron atlanticus, the biggest octopus in the world). I drew the idea for the (readable) logo by hand and later we digitalized it of course.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

It’s not really one style but we name it symphonic blackened death. In our country, the Netherlands, there are not many bands like us. Especially not with a female vocalist and bassist. I think the combination of the lineup, our backgrounds of bands like God Dethroned, Sinister, Izegrim and Bleeding Gods, and the music we make, is what make us unique. So not especially one thing or so.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

Our show is energetic, but also a lot of with the fans and not forgetting to also have a lot of fun on stage. If the fans see we are having fun and they smile back – mission accomplished! When they hear our catchy, bombastic, heavy as fuck and epic sound including the terrifying deep grunts and screams of Marloes, they will want to step into the big tent of the Sophie Lancaster stage and enjoy our show.

Have you played Bloodstock before? If so, when?

No, this will be the first time. We’ve heard a lot of great stories of Bloodstock everywhere we’ve been so we are very stoked to be booked this year. Looking forward to it!

How/when did you find out that you’d be playing the SOPHIE stage?

When we were getting booked.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

Not to reveal it of course, but a combination of old and maybe  some new material.

Stage times haven’t been announced yet, so which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

I want to check out our friends in Nervosa and Rotting Christ, so we hope not to clash with those bands! They are awesome!

What are you working on at the moment?

The promotion of our newest album Anatomy of Darkness. It will be released on October 25th by Listenable Records!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Well that was many years ago with a different band: halfway the show we stopped because during the hard partying of the audience they all threw small pieces of gingerbread (not sure why!) and beer around! But also a lot to the stage, our gear and to us! Not on purpose but they didn’t stop so we had to make a decision!

What drink do you throw back to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

A few beers (not to much!) and a lot of water. After the show, same story.
