Why The Matrix: Resurrections Was A Box Office Flop

When the news broke that a new Matrix film would be being released – the excitement was felt everywhere! The Matrix films are, of course, of legendary status and almost everyone you know has seen the films at some point in their lives. But when the latest release hit the markets, it did surprisingly badly compared to what everyone had hoped and expected – why could that be?

We all know the famous scene of Neo dodging hundreds of bullets as they fly towards him and everyone can identify the green glowing code screen that has become oh-so-familiar with the franchise – The Matrix is a classic, so naturally, we were all pretty excited when we heard there would be a new movie coming out. They marketed the movie in all the right ways, and promised us action as well as our much-loved characters from the original films – so why did The Matrix: Resurrections bomb at the box office and receive some not so hot reviews?

One thing is for sure – there was definitely enough hype around the film release as much as there was for it once it came out – but it just didn’t seem to do the franchise justice. It’s even trickled down to those who find themselves in the same field of work that Neo found himself, IT and tech – there are people working for IT Companies around the world that have taken to bashing the latest Matrix film after being die-hard fans of the original films from earlier years.

The latest Matrix release was set some 60 years in the future after the first Matrix film was released – the director, Lana Wachowski returns to the dystopian and augmented version of reality alongside the franchise’s much-loved stars Keanu Reeves as Neo and of course, Carrie-Anne Moss who plays the role of Trinity. With these two reprising their beloved roles, it was shocking to see that The Matrix Resurrections failed to capture the same magical essence and excitement of the originally trilogy and boasted only sub-part ticket sales numbers in comparison to its older counterparts.

If you pair this sub-par reaction and receiving of the film to its loyal and most-dedicated fans, you can only imagine how that would translate to new or non-fans – there was very little interest from new-watchers of the film as they were not exactly hearing the most positive reviews since the film’s release – this only added to the failures of the film at the box office.

The Matrix Resurrections managed to rake in a mere $427.3 million globally so far – compare that to its counterparts like the very first The Matrix film which racked up an impressive $466.6 million globally, as well as the newer The Matrix Reloaded which managed to take home an even larger amount in profit ang grossed $741.8 million worldwide in total. When you have a look at the financials, it is clear to see that the latest release was not such a hit as it would have been thought to be – while not a complete flop, there was certainly more hope for the film to be a much greater success.
