We’d like to thank the staff at BonFest for inviting us up last weekend and apologies that we couldn’t manage it in a press capacity. However, Pit Troll was there working security and told us that the whole thing was brilliant and went without a hitch. The weather was a little sucky, but the campsite was open and local businesses ensured their cold beer could be enjoyed by warm open fires to help offset any outside chill!
The highlight of this year’s BonFest was the unveiling of a statue of one of Kirriemuir’s famous sons – sadly departed AC/DC vocalist Bon Scott. The funds for the statue were raised entirely from public donations with the blessing of the town’s council and it’s placed in a wonderful little circular garden. Around the base of the statue, in the form of a mosaic, are the words:
And the music was good and the music was loud, and the singer turned to the crowd and said ‘Let there be rock.’
As you can see from the photo, the statue is a great piece of work – Bon with a big grin on his face, raising his microphone high while clutching a set of bagpipes. It’s taken a couple of years to give him pride of place in the town along with J.M. Barrie, creator of Peter Pan, another famous son of Kirriemuir.
