Each year Wacken hosts a “battle of the bands” made up of entrants from thirty countries. Canada has done well, winning twice so far (out of three years of entering!) including last year. Well, their entrant this year, after a series of competitions across five territories resulting in a final at the weekend, is melodic thrashers Profaner.
Profaner come from Hamilton and beat off the winners of the Prairie (Tales of the Tomb), Ontario (Pyramid Theorem), Quebec (DistortHead) and British Columbia heats (The Mountain Man) to lift the crown and a very impressive set of drum-related prizes.
One of these years I must get to Wacken so I can see the end results of this international competition!
