Catalysis have been at the forefront for Scottish groove metal music for a number of years now, releasing a plethora of releases since there inception almost ten years ago. After their huge second album Betrayer in 2023 Catalysis, like so many bands, had line up issues which almost killed the band. Leaving only guitarist/vocalist Drew and drummer Calum they took some time in 2024 to put together a new line up. With the addition of bassist Robi, guitarist Jamie and vocalist Andrew, Catalysis are back at full strength and releasing their first EP with this new line up… and what a banger it is.
The Only Way Out Is Through is the perfect mixture mixture of groove metal and metalcore, with “Burning Bridges” being my personal favourite. If you know your Catalysis, you will love this and special mention should go to vocalist Andrew who had big shoes to fill and fill them he did. What also makes this EP so strong is the production.
Catalysis decided that on The Only Way Out Is Through, they really wanted to step it up a notch production wise, and so for the first time, opted to bring in an external producer. The EP was co-produced and co-engineered by guitarist Drew Cochrane and local talent Mark Tindal of Open Eyes Production, who had engineered the drum sessions for Betrayer and Innova. Working with a local producer meant the band were able to be far more involved in the mixing process, enabling them to deliver a mix which really captures the essence of the bands live sound.
Get on this, the band by buying the EP and seeing them on tour with dates to be released. I will be fortunate enough to see them when Catalysis are guest headliners at this year’s Metal to the Masses final next month. I will be making sure that they play “Burning Bridges” for sure.
