Holmfirth Picturedrome plays host to a trio of gigs on the nights of October 7th, 8th and 9th this year with some brilliant acts featuring. The line-ups and details are as follows:
Friday 7 October – JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR
Joanne Shaw Taylor has established herself as the UK’s number one star in the blues rock world. The girl with the big voice from the Black Country has toured extensively around the world and released critically acclaimed albums, gaining a global fanbase and playing alongside some of her musical idols.
Sold out concerts. Loyal fans. Her name in lights. Joanne Shaw Taylor never anticipated any of that at the start. Back then, she was just an ordinary Black Country schoolgirl, bored with the disposable pop she heard on late 90s radio, rifling through her father’s record collection for sunken treasure, and falling for albums by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Collins and Jimi Hendrix.
At 13 she played her first electric guitar. “Guitars were always lying around the house,” says Joanne. At 14, she defied her teachers to play The Marquee and Ronnie Scott’s, and began to overcome insecurity about her voice. Described in the press as “A world class Blues talent” (Classic Rock), A thrilling guitarist and a powerful vocalist” (Time Out) and possessing “…heart wrenching vocals” (Sunday Times), Joanne is now well and truly on her way in the music world.
Since then, it’s gone stratospheric, with Joanne breaking into the notoriously hard-to-crack US market, beating the stereotypes of her age and gender, and being watched by 17 million viewers as she played an angel-winged solo during Annie Lennox’s set at the 2012 Diamond Jubilee Concert. That same summer gave us Almost Always Never; a bar-raising third album that found Joanne dodging expectations, writing the songs her muse dictated, and diving in at the deep end with just her talent to keep her afloat.
September 2016 sees Joanne release Wild, the Nashville-recorded album that sees her musical style evolve ever so slightly under the helm of legendary producer Kevin Shirley.
Joanne is a bona fide star with famous fans across the guitar world including Joe Bonamassa, Tedeschi Trucks, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Glenn Hughes and John Mayall to name but a few.
Saturday 8 October – DR FEELGOOD + special guest Rebecca Downes
Touring pretty much continuously since 1973, Dr Feelgood always give 100% of the finest British rhythm and blues to make you feel good. Performing such hits as including Milk And Alcohol, Down At The Doctors and Roxette, the Doctors will see you now!
Formed on Canvey Island in Essex in the early 1970’s Dr Feelgood has become one of the most popular live rhythm and blues acts in the world.
Best known for early singles like “Back in the Night” and “Roxette”, Dr Feelgood arose from the ashes of R&B bands The Fix and The Roamers. Although their most commercially productive years were the early to mid 1970s, they continue to tour and record to this day. Throughout their entire career, Dr. Feelgood never left simple, hard-driving rock and roll behind, and their devotion to the blues and R&B earned them a devoted fan base.
Special guest Rebecca Downes
Hey, you know that trick you can do with a fresh bottle of Cola and you drop a mint in and it explodes in a frothy fountain… Well, take a really hot, tight R’n’B band forged from top musicians and front it with Rebecca Downes and the effect is much the same – an explosion of Soul tinged Blues from the days when R’n’B rocked the world. In a genre that’s almost over run with pyrotechnic guitar slinger’s and rocking Blues shouters, Rebecca is doing things her way; taking the music back to its raw basics; touching the same vibe that Ike & Tina had when it was more about the music than the relationship. In perfect synchronicity with writing partner & band leader Steve Birkett, Rebecca’s take on the Blues is not to merely tell about what brings her down, but to almost celebrate that what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. There’s humour in there, and warmth, but don’t try and kick this girl when she’s down, she’ll bite through to the bone.
Sunday 9 October – RYAN McGARVEY BAND feat Carmine Rojas
Ryan McGarvey is a star on the rise. In just the past few years his accolades have included being selected by Eric Clapton from over 4,000+ artists worldwide to perform at his 2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago, to the Guitar Player Magazine’s Annual Readers Choice Award for Best New Talent in 2013.
2014 proved to be another epic year for McGarvey as he was voted the winner of Best Guitarist in the European Blues Awards.
Since then, with the release of his latest album The Road Chosen, Ryan has toured internationally, including major festivals throughout Europe. He has not only gained a growing national and international fan base, but iration from his personal idols as well.
