Birdeatsbaby return with their new single, “Ribbons”, a dark progressive lullaby for fans of Opeth, Spiritbox and Deftones.
“Ribbons” is a song firmly rooted in the shadows that lie at the heart of Birdeatsbaby. In this latest musical offering (their first release in 3 years), lead singer Mishkin writes about when choices can become restrictions. This metaphor is brought to life through a Shibari-themed music video that sees the band tied in different rope positions and suspended in mid-air. Accompanying this striking scene is a backdrop of dreamy, ethereal metal that drifts from delicate melodies into a heavy crescendo.
“Ribbons” is the first release from their album, HEX, a dark progressive collection of occult themed songs. Building on the success of the band’s last album, The World Conspires, which saw critical acclaim from the likes of Prog Magazine and Orkus, the band now step further into heavier rock and metal territory. Moving away from the classical instruments that pioneered their earlier work, Birdeatsbaby’s sound is now comprised of Garry Mitchell’s aggressive guitar riffs, Anna Mylee’s progressive rhythms and Hana Piranha’s lush layers of cello and harp. This heavy concoction lays the foundation for lead singer, Mishkin Fitzgerald, who now adds metal screams and growls to the ever-expanding sound of Birdeatsbaby.
Production comes from award-winning Evan Rodaniche (of Cage9 fame), and video from photographer and videographer Scott Chalmers (Jamie Lenman, Saint Agnes).
The single is available to purchase on Bandcamp right now, and is streamable from all the usual locations.
