When I Die: Brazilian outfit releases first single, “Pills”

Emerging from São Paulo, When I Die boldly resurrects the classic gothic sound reminiscent of late 70s and early 80s bands, while firmly bridging with contemporary trends within the movement; also maintaining the heavier aspects of the genre.

This blend of influences includes iconic bands of the genre such as Sisters of Mercy, Lords of the New Church, Xmal Deutschland, Christian Death, Rosetta Stone, Angels of Liberty, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, alongside a harmonious alignment with newer bands like Nox Novacula, The Toods, Denuit, Sextile, JE T’AIME, Straight Razor, VLURE, among others.

The debut track “manages to reference these influences in their music, creating a unique sound with a strong identity,” according to bassist Joe Klenner.

The group features musicians who have previously been part of prominent bands in São Paulo’s alternative scene, blending the original gothic sound with elements of metal, post-punk, rock ‘n’ roll, and other eccentricities.

Vocalist Johnny Monster also commented on the single: “‘Pills’ resurrects the post-punk gothic soul of the genre’s great bands. The track, initially dark and mysterious, flows into a resounding, epic chorus, reminiscent of what we haven’t heard in the style for some time. When I Die aims to bring its dark anthems to the world, and the fact that we’re from Brazil makes it all the more interesting,” he analyses.
