100-word review: Woland – Hyperion

Woland - HyperionWoland’s Hyperion was released in mid-February and was recorded by the band themselves in their home studio. It’s available through Indie Recordings.

Post black metal is a new term on me, but such a badge Woland choose to wear. It’s heavy, that’s for sure, with a driving sound that’s unrelenting from the beginning of each track to the end. Unrelenting, that is, except for some wonderful clean guitar segments and piano mini-concertos that really stand out.

Despite the wall of sound, the tracks are slow head-nodders rather than pit-openers. The classical instruments/segments mixed with the far heavier distorted guitars can jar at times, but it somehow still works.

On an inventiveness scale, it’s akin to Norway’s black-jazz masters Shining. Interesting experiment.
