100-word review: Xandria – Sacrificium

Xandria - SacrificiumNew album and new singer (Dianne van Giersbergen) from this German symphonic metal outfit. Release is through Napalm Record and due May 2nd to 7th, depending on where you live.

I’ve not heard their older material, but Xandria can definitely claim to have one of the more operatic singers in the genre as of this release. van Giersbergen’s voice varies from fronting the songs to being perfectly melted into the overall miasma depending on the song.

If you fancy something to romance your partner, then “The Undiscovered Land”‘s gentle introduction leads into ionate climax. Then you could hit them with the frenetic energy of “Temple of Hate” if you have the stamina. It lasts a whole 5:59 which, as my wife will tell you, is quite the challenge.
